I work 4 days a week for a ceramics and lighting designer as a general assistant. Doing everything from export, design research, paying boss' bills, project management, materials and production processes research.

I just earn £6 per hour so I bring home only £670 bacon before tax which in London is a s-t-r-e-t-c-h... The job is cool and very varied and the boss is very funny and charming. Hoping to get something better paid after I finish my MA in cultural studies in September.

  • In my last job I took home £957 a month as a research scientist, although that was part-time. I have a degree, masters and a PhD.

I don't earn a lot about 750 after tax but I do get 14 weeks paid holidays:D a year which is great as I'm a mum of 3 and get the same holidays as them. Plus I really love my job.
My OH earns between 1550-1700 a month. He works for a food production company. No real qualifications just hard work and has worked his way up the company ladder.

  • newbie poster - be gentle!

I work as a senior corporate secretary in the NHS - it's around 1900pm net (and you wondered where all your money went). But 10 mins away from home and over 30 days holiday a year, v.flexible when it comes to family stuff

OH is a driving instructor - it now costs £20 an hour for a lesson (and that's cheaper than BSM or AA) so can be pretty lucrative. Can cost as little as a grand to do the training and you're totally flexible, can work extra if you need a bit more money. Need to have nerves of steel though! :)

I'm amazed at how I am able to get by on so little really. I am also amazed at how many people are unable to get by on so much, but I guess circumstances are different for everybody.

I gained an honours degree about ten year ago, which enabled me to get a reasonable job. A few years later my wife became very ill and had to give up her job as a teacher, so she now has no wage. At about the same time we had our first child, so to help out I went part time. I now only have half a wage. I'm a housing surveyor. We had to tighten our belts a bit when our joint income fell by about thirty five thousand pounds.

We now get a bit of help by way of benefits and we have two children.

Not too long ago my take home pay was well under five hundred pounds per month, although it's a few hundred more than that now.

To be honest I think we're quite well off. We have a fabulous family and friends, own a lovely house in a nice area, drive a nice car, have no debts and have a little money in the bank for a rainy day.

When I think about it, I don't know how we do it!!
