if you look on monster.co.uk, you can search type of work and area of country to see what the local average is for lots of kinds of work.

  • I take home less than that also! I'm in the freight industry (deep sea, air freight and road)
Was debt free... then went travelling!
  • I work as an admin assistant for the Fire Service- I earn considerably less than your OH, but I was wondering if he'd be interested in becoming a retained firefighter?
There's some info here- not all Services use the system, but he'd probably be able to do his plumbing job at the same time if it is something he's interested in.

    Total pay 1300/month

  • I work for the Home Office, I deal with Very naughty people ! Im fairly new at it, but find it very interesting and rewarding....
  • I do copy-editing & writing, and make a similar amount to your OH (sometimes less as I have a flexible schedule), although I have some self-employed income too on top of that. My OH is a software engineer & makes about 4x my salary - he has a degree in computer science.

Maybe your OH should consider his interests and the type of thing he most enjoys doing first, and then see what type of work is available that would be fulfilling as well as well paid?

I have my own clothing business. I don't take home a set wage - just pay myself what ever I need.

Wages differ quite a bit depending on the area you live in. I'm in the north and would expect a job paying £20k here would pay around £30-35k in the south just because of the increased living expenses.
  • Im a Legal PA for an aviation law firm.
