Hi all, this is my first post so please be gentle with me:) I rang the switching number tonight and they told me the following....the paperwork would be out in the next few days but my account would not be switched for another 12-18 months, pretty much just before Santander take over. When I queried this and told them I wanted it done straight away I was told to ring 08457242424 as they would be able to make the switch straight away. I've just rung the 0845 number and they have told me this isn't possible. Now I'm not sure what to do, do I go back to the switching line and start again?

Hi Lizzie, the 0845 724 2424 number is the telephone banking numbers for RBS. When I spoke to telephone banking last night, I was told that if you put the request in writing to your branch stating that you want to move your account to a branch in Scotland and give the name and sort code of the branch, that this would be the quickest way to change to a branch in Scotland.

I wrote to my branch today and will report back as to any response I receive. I've also requested the transfer form from the 0800 number but I'm planning on using that only if I do not receive a satisfactory response to my letter.

PS Everyone ringing the 0800 number is told about the 12 to 18 month period.
  • I think the 0800 call centre (Indian ?) is working off an EU inspired brief or they are confusing the 12-18 months with the timeframe relating to the takeover by Santander.

My advice would be to either phone, or if you can visit, a Scottish RBS branch and set up another account. The process is very straightforward and the new account is operational within hours and accessible on-line the next day.

The main problem I am trying to address is to ensure that my details relating to the Closed account in England NEVER reach Santander's computers !!!!

RBS need to take the 0800 call centre to task as the information being given out must be in conflict with RBS's duty of care to at least provide accurate information.

Given calls are recorded they will absolutely be reading from an EU inspired brief.

The bank can find itself in a whole heap of trouble if there's any hint of encouraging customers to retained parts of the business.

That said that's no reason not to give out the correct information.

I had a very Irish sounding chap when I rang the 0800 number on Monday at about 1930.

My account switching took an interesting turn today. I applied to open an account at a branch in Scotland and received the paperwork to sign which I did and sent back, I have today received a letter saying that I have not passed standard checks and so they aren't able to open an account. This is despite me being an RBS customer since 1982.

Rang the 0845 number on the letter and the CS guy said there isn't anything they can do about it if I have failed the standard checks. Spoke to my branch who said there was nothing they can do.

    So... What next?
  • Surely they must have to tell you which part of the standard checks you have failed ?

Just open a new account, choosing a branch in Scotland. You'll have to switch the Direct Debits yourself , but it's always best to do that yourself.

The person I spoke to at My RBS branch said that this was not possible when I asked to do this. I was told I would have to open the account at a scottish branch myself and then move DDs etc.. I did press the point like what if I moved to scotland, how would I transfer my account? and they specifically said that there is no internal process which can do account transfers between RBS branches. :(:(

  • HI

Im with ThinkBanking with Sort code 16 16 23 ive tried the sort code checker on the RBS Website andit cant find it.
Although ThinkBanking are their own entity they use RBS to administer the two accounts.

Would it be likely that ThinkBanking will move over to Santander and the sortcodes change to the 0901 types and if they do does that mean that Santander will ruin ThinkBanking services.

    Thanks
