To jump back a few steps to the OTA updating process, my understanding was that if a handset had software version 1.15.405.4, then it was sim-free, unlocked etc. and would receive the HTC stock Froyo upgrade OTA without having to wait on the carrier to push it.
I am on Virgin Mobile and my handset is version 1.15.405.4 at the moment (the only virgin branding is a splash screen after the htc splash when booting the phone). However there seems to be no update available for me when I manually check for it.
I also tried doing this over wi-fi only, with the virgin sim card taken out, but that didn't work either. Will the OTA upgrade be rolled out carrier-by-carrier, even for unlocked phones? My understanding of the OTA process is a bit shaky - does the phone look for this on HTC servers (using either the 3g or wifi connection) or does it get pushed to/from the carrier's servers?
Froyo sounds awesome. The biggest feature I'm looking forward to is the wifi hotspot so that I can use my phone to feed my laptop and ipod when I'm out and about.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
new froyo features explained on this xda thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7444078#post7444078
yesterday had forgotten to mention the cloud to device computing in google chrome and firefox browsers, google it to know what it means http://techcrunch.com/2010/05/23/chrome-to-android-push/ your wife can now send you shopping list to your phone from her computer and you can receive it like Jack Bauer in 24, no more forgetting getting the grocery home as it will always be there on your phone as and when your wife updates her shopping listcheck it out, you can do a lot more with the cloud to device computing option, also can turn screen on 3 sides and it aligns but not for the top side, home long press gives access to 8 last apps used rather than 6 earlier, the start "quietly brilliant" htc start up SCREAMING SOUND is a lot quieter and probably will uninstall the 'silent reboot' app that i had installed to shut up the screaming boot up sound before i got froyo update.
forgot to mention that the in call volume from ear piece seems a bit louder now and clearer than before. apps can update automatically if you choose that option. gmail copy paste, i think youtube videos in HQ quality is a lot lot clearer than before. my friend with the iphone was stunned with the youtube video quality in HQ streaming via 3g (i could make out the improvement from before too).
these are the things i found that i remember. see a lot more on the xda link.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
By having tasks running in the background, does that use up battery life or affect performance?
The only reason i use task killers is that i thought that they improve battery and performance?0 -

if you open menu - settings - applications - running processes .. then you will see that only a few processes are actually running and android is doing a good job of closing processes that are not needed. and all the processes that are running are usually interlinked. so anything that you use a task killer to stop, will be restarted by the system automatically using more system resources. atleast thats what i understand after reading through quite a few posts on android.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
And randomly, email sync on my second account starts working again. Not sure if it's something I did (I've done a lot of poking and praying), or if it sorted itself out... either way, Froyo now officially ROCKS.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

my gmail wasnt synching initially but later did, there is a separate button for synching for each item and also the synch all button. i pressed the synch all button and then unselected what ever i didnt want to synch. also there is an option for background synch and another for autosynch, both these werent ticked, i had to manually tick the second one and then it worked. i dont remember if i had unticked that option previously accidentally myself though.bubblesmoney :hello:0

I have a fairly old G1 and the battery is getting worn out - for this reason I recently removed all the facebook, myspace, weather bug widgets from the home screen and both the performance and standby time have improved immensely. So my advice is to only run stuff that you absolutley need - I really don't need to know when my friends are taking a dump etc, and I can see what the weather is doing by looking out of the window0
