We have never in 7 years of Broadban been anywhere near 40g download, yet O2 phoned and said we had 56 g dowwnloads last month. I think they may have made an error which makes the service even worse if that is the case. As i said the service has been poor from the start and we were unable to even watch a clip on Ypoutube without it stalling.
They don't monitor downloads, they monitor data usage. Up or down, streamed or downloaded, it all counts. You say you don't download films, but you stream (or try to) from YouTube, it's still eating up data, what's the difference?
Which tariff are you on please? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If he isn't on Access then he is the only O2 LLU customer in history to have been contacted about download volumes so I can't see that there is any doubt. I can't see there is any doubt that someone is making heavy use of the connection either.0

Sounds like either a) O2 have made a mistake (as you said), b)your kids are downloading without you knowing or c) your router has been hacked and people are using your internet...
There is no way on this earth a couple of hours xbox per night uses 56 GB.
Would be worth a call to O2 I think or maybe get a friend who knows their onions in IT to have a look.0 -

The FUP is only applied on access package and not on LLU packages. If you had a LLU package (standard, Premium or Pro) and were contacted for high usage then please email me your BT landline number to webteam@o2.com ,I'll check this for you.“Official Company Representative
I am an official company representative of O2. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com"0 -

O2 were a victim of their own success on the Access package and quickly became oversubscribed which meant that they had to bring in a FUP. I used to be on O2 Access before their traffic management policy totally !!!!!!ed my connection up and it really was a fantastic service. The reason Access isn't that well advertised on the website now is because O2 would rather not take any more Access customers on, but the option is still there if you really want it.
Thomson routers aren't the most reliable (my new ISP uses them too), but they are pretty decent pieces of kit and the wireless range on them is fantastic. You're also getting a pricey piece of kit for free and people aren't obliged to use the routers supplied by their ISPs. It also makes sense for O2 to keep control over the firmware and noise profile/gain settings; as a tech support drone for an ISP myself, I know what customers will attempt to do with their equipment then blame us when it goes wrong ;-)0 -
On the same theme of O2 claiming that we used 56gb last month, their mobile phone branch is now saying both I and my son sent over 8,000 txts last month! The most I have ever texted is about 20 times a week. Looks like O2 are in the wild exaggeration business.0

Maybe you should talk to your son....or maybe you are exaggerating.
If you have an online account, you will be able to see exactly what they are claiming. Otherwise, ask to see the bill if you haven't already got one.0 -
I've just requested my MAC code from 02, as I also got the phonecall telling me I was using too much etc.
Bizzare, they tried to keep me as a customer offering 3 months free, or credit. Yet they ring you to tell you cut down the usage or we'll terminate your contract.
Anyway, cancelled and am moving elsewhere where I can buy bandwidth in chunks dependant on use.
Beware though for anyone cancelling. 02 want the router back, even though I have been with them roughly 2 years. I asked what would happen if I had used my own and don't have the thompson...they want £50!!!
Luckily I do still have it, and have to send it back via a jiffy bag they will send me.
So to anyone cancelling, who doesnt have the router, beware! Don't see how they can charge for it mind if you are out of your 12m contract.
They seem to be going down the pan if they want a router worth a fiver back.0 -

Maybe not a bizarre as you think. It's possible that when you first signed up for O2 broadband, that there was no LLU in your area. So you may have been on the BT product, Access.
So it appears they have LLU in your area now and are offering you that service. Take it, but do it yourself, signing up via Quidco.
Go on to their website in order to check what I say is correct. AFAIK O2 have never asked someone to curtail their usage on their LLU product.0
