Well vegemite is so I guess notasgood :D Marmite would be too.

I can only hazzard a guess that if Marmite is a different recipe in OZ to the UK, then Vegemite must also be VASTLY different!!:rotfl: :D:p

Must ask DS3 if he sampled the "delights" of Vegemite when he spent a year "down under" a few years ago!!

  • OMG I am soooo hungry.

I have no bread till the morning (BM on timer) and a huge catering sized tub of Marmite.

I also like to butter my toast, spread the marmite, the re-butter the toast.

Is this just me or shall I blame my mother:confused: (not good for the figure)

Am I right in thinking it is a by-product of the brewing industry ? I've always assumed that was why it is made in Burton - but I may be totally wrong about the whole thing.

You're all forgetting that Marmite is around fifteen percent salt. That's insanely high. There is a reduced salt equivalent available from Health Food shops but I wish Marmite would bring out their own.

Out of curiousity where did you find that figure?

    This: http://www.marmite.com/love/nutrition/nutrition.html

gives the sodium content as 4.3g per 100g.

    And this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/medical_notes/393201.stm

says: "To calculate the amount of salt in a product, multiply the sodium content by two-and-a-half times".

So we'd end up with 10.75% - which I agree is still very high.

(Looking again I see that the first link also says a 4g serving contains 0.44g salt, which would be 11%).

Am I the only one who refuses to buy the "squeezy" Marmite? It's a different formula - too runny - and it's wrongity wrong wrong!

I would agree...just tried it for the first time and there's something not quite right with the whole experience. Had it with Low fat Flora and it seemed to 'float' to the top of the marmite giving an oily effect

For some reason milk seems to wash the saltiness away just nicely for me :j
