I didn't go for a run as I decided to do some more reading for my assignment but I will go out tomorrow to catch up and probably run 5k or 10k if I decide I have enough time

    @Tete,
I happened to see walking poles in my local Mr T, they were the folding ones so not sure of how stable they may be though. Reduced from £7.50 to £5.00. Remembered reading about them here and thought of you!

Not posted on here in an age..... mainly due to having done very little running since my 10km race on 23rd Jan when I pulled a calf muscle (not too badly, but enough to make running a problem for a while)

Have done a short (1.75mile) route a few times, but when I went out with the club a couple of weeks back I had to cut the route short and ended up doing about 2.8 miles of the 5.4 mile planned run 'cos I could feel the shin splint I picked up in September complaining a bit :(

Off work this week, so was determined to 'get out there', and have managed it so far. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I did the same route - but managed more of the nasty (short but steep) uphill stretch each day, and added a bit more on at the end of the route each day (3.03 miles Monday, 3.1 miles Tuesday, and 3.3 miles Wednesday). Over ate on junk yesterday (knew I shouldn't have tried out my new giant cupcake mould on Tuesday!), so decided to try a longer run today to burn some of it off - and managed 4.37 miles on a different route without the killer hill. Breathing's doing fine but the legs that are reluctant to do any further, and I'm pulling up before either of them gives out on me again (the shin splint is in one leg and the dodgy calf muscle is in the other) - so I ended up walking a half mile home after the running distance today.

Averaged around the 9:30/mile on Mon, Tues and Wed (which is the same average as I got for my 10km in Jan), but slipped to an average of 9:50/mile today. A tad disappointed with that given I only added on a mile, but I had a lot more roads to cross (including several busy ones) so that will account for some of the hold-ups. Am now considering sticking with todays route for my next few runs while I try to pick my average speed back up, and then add a bit more onto the route. I've got a half-marathon in June, and in order to come close to my brothers expected time (he was supposed to be doing the same one, but is now doing a different one a month earlier due to a date conflict with a coast-to-coast bike ride) I need to be looking for a time of 1hr 50 (which I think means about 8:23/mile !!!). He's expecting to do his half in about 1hr 40, but uses an age/sex calculator to get comparisons between us and that gives me an extra 10 minutes to 'match' him.

I've also been walking the dog every day - 3.03 miles Mon & Tues, 4.8 miles yesterday during which I got him trotting a couple of times (he doesn't like running at all, despite being a running breed!) - so I'm covering a fair amount of mileage this week when I combine everything. Not walked him yet today though... holiding off for early evening as I'm off to the running club meet to pick up a new top (not running with them though as that would have meant skipping the runs this morning and tomorrow morning)

  • Haven't been doing too much running this week as I have just run out of time! Am planning a long slow run today, but my lsr will be about 10 miles :) Hopefully. Also getting a bit disheartened as I am not losing any weight :( I am not overweight (I'm in the middle of ideal on BMI chart), but do still want to lose some and it is annoying when it doesn't come off! I keep telling myself it is because I run and muscle weighs more than fat.........:D
Hope you have all been more successful in your running efforts than me x

Keep going guys - you are all doing really well, especially those returning from injury.....take it easy and you will get back to full fitness in the fullness of time.

I did 11 miles today, quite happy with that because I have been enjoying the excesses of life over these last few days, and I was very tempted just to go back to bed this morning :o

However, I have lost a toenail in the course of todays run, resulting in a sockfull of blood as I ran round....oh the joys of long distance running!

Hi - after not running since thursday night, what with kids, oh not being well etc. Had my roast at 6pm then went out at 7.30 and did 7 miles.

Usually run then eat - it wasnt that bad probably better for weight loss as well. Dont go to bed on a full stomach.

Apart from having a craving for a nice bowl of ice-cream now

Good luck Hypno, not long to the tapering !

CW18, it's frustrating returning from injury, but make sure you dont push it too much. You are right to stop if the pain feels injury related. Shin splints are not so bad, as the more conditioned you get, they get better.

I would stick to short distances, perhaps 3 miles, with the first one being a walking pace warm up jog and then once warmed up increase the pace, but I would want to be doing that at least 5 times a week as this will help with the shin spints.
Once the body feels better, increase one run to 4,5,6 etc, but keep your other runs short, and quick.

Looks like your times are very good, so I am sure that if you can nurse yourself through the early stages you will soon see benefits.

RLea, 7 miles...very good, only 10km for me
