Righto, I've been on Google maps and worked out that the path in the park near my house is about 1/2 a mile ... so going to try and run around at least half of this tomorrow morning before I have to stop and collapse - does that sound feasible? Or am I being a total wimp? It'll be my first run since school!

Give it a go and see if it works for you......to begin with, just getting out there is great :D When I started a few years ago now (have been running on and off ;)) I started on a run/walk programme (you should be able to find a run/walk plan by Googling it)...I found this very helpful, but obviously it may not work for everyone :) Also run slower than you think you should as if you run as fast as you can you'll run out of energy and motivation quicker!

I did 4 miles on Weds, but haven't been able to fit in another run since then :( Just been to busy. At least I have had a nice couple of days rest (have still been walking ;)) and will be running at least 6 miles tomorrow :)

    Happy running x

Glad I went out yesterday and not today as its been heavy sleety snow for most of today and lots of slush

I had a thought about why yesterdays 6miles went well. I had a massive pasta meal yesterday for lunch and I think thats why my run went so well yesterday and I wasn't as tired or feeling lacking in energy and hungry like I am sometimes. Looks like I should eat more carbs and protein at lunch time.

Not sure if my weight or stomach will reduce in size though! Anyway will be back out again tomorrow all being well

Today I had a 40 minute run in Sofia. Does not sound like much but this city is very hilly! In fact coming back up a hill was rather hard. Tomorrow more.

  • Back from a 6 miler this morning. Went well and I extended the route after I ran out of route on Friday. Thought I'd addedd enough but was still a bit short and had to double back for a few mins.

Training going well this week and will be back for a couple of 3 milers this week and crack on with a couple of longer runs next weekend

After a couple of weeks of no running for various reasons, most of which come under the heading of "making excuses" :o, I did a most enjoyable, but cold, 7.5 miles this morning to get me back into the swing of things.

8 weeks til marathon day - will be cranking up the long Sunday runs over the next few weeks......

    Happy running guys xx

Thanks very much for the tips, the one about running slower is a good one I think! I ran about a third of the way round in the end, in two bursts. Hadn't taken into account that most of the paths would be flooded and that put me off a bit, and it was SO COLD I thought my lungs were going to explode. Am off to running club at work this lunchtime, I was told that it's perfect for absolute beginners but I have a horrible feeling I'll be the only one of those amongst the Linfords and Kellys!

EDIT - just had an email to say that running has been cancelled due to instructor absence. I have to admit to feeling a little bit relieved! Will go to the gym anyway though - promise!

Don't worry about it Tete, there's loads of people who run and are slow, but they enjoy it and that's the main point. And yes, do run slower, the pace comes later, first you build you stamina.

  • Tete - Walking poles are best for going downhill - they mean you can do downhill much faster (as you are a quadruped) and you significantly reduce the pressure on your knees. When we tried the Welsh 3k we had to stop part way ... but then we did the walking tour of Mont Blanc wityh poles and far less problems.

Can I ask a silly question about the walking poles on downhill? Are you putting them out in front of you? Does that not make it precarious as you're leaning forward? I always lean back a bit on the downhill so if I slip I just land on my bum rather than go rolling to the bottom! (This is why I think poles must be a hindrance, I just can't imagine how to co-ordinate myself!)

Went to the gym yesterday and did some fast uphill walking on the treadmill, might attempt breaking into a jog today :D
