(left over from xmas so thought why not?)

Just another 3 miles today with my dog for company who I think was a bit more tired today compared to yesterday. I think I will try and tick over this week at 3miles to at least get out there and run rather than talk myself out of it and not go and think I can't spare an hour or so after work. Will try a longer one again at the weekendfinal unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550

Hi All - On the recommendation of Firewalker, I am officially stating that I need help this year with my running challenges.
I had a few moments of madness and a lucky ballot entry ... sooo ...
15th May Great Manchester Run - Alzheimers Society
17th July Zip wire across the Ship Canal - Beechwood Cancer Care Centre [Not a run butt scary all the same]
???? Great North Run - Unexpected ballot place!!!!
9th Oct Liverpool Marathon - Moment of sheer madness before the GNR ballot was announced
I last ran in 2009 (3x10km Manchester, Sunderland, Sheffield). Before that I did the race for life in 2005, Sunderland 10km in 2007 and Manchester in 2008.
I shall start at the beginning of the thread and work out what I should be doing (apart from dusting off my shoes and getting my bum in gear)

Hi NorthernLas, this is some programme. Cool running to you!
I went out for about 1h and 20 min today - felt good.

Inspired by everyone's entries into runs made me decide to apply for my first 10krace in April. A local race for the first one. I've downloaded the forms to post today. Let's see if I get in. I'll try the route at the weekend and have 7 weeks to get ready for it.
I think having a target to run for will help me keep motivated. When I originally aimed for 5k and 10k that was enough to keep me motivated but since I got to 10k I found it waived quite a lot
Anyway its a day off running today while me and the dog recover and should be back out there tomorrow
Happy running everyone!final unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550 -

Ha, me too! The Great North Run is not really something I've always WANTED to do, more something I just always thought I WOULD do, if that makes sense. Have entered the ballot a couple of times and not got a place, but this year I have! Cripes!
I've never run before at all and am not very fit so I need all the help I can get!
GNR is on 18th Sept, so I was thinking of maybe doing a 5k Race For Life on 28 May then the Great North 10k on 17 July as a way of keeping me motivated and building me up ... rather than getting to the end of August and realising I've done no training whatsoever. Does this sound sensible?
(I'm also doing the Three Peaks Challenge on 25th June, took leave of my senses for a while I think when I was signing up for all this!)
There's a running club on Mondays where I work, so I'm not going to do anything I don't think until I go along there next week, I want to make sure my 'technique' is OK before I start going out on my own.
In the meantime, is there any particular post on these threads I should be reading with beginner advice, or does anyone know of any useful online articles or free progress trackers?
I'll stop waffling now anyway, getting myself excited!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -

 Hello
Runners World is a good website to look at - it has a forum to ask questions and also training plans etc.I used to go there a lot, but not finding so much time now, but I do lurk
Was going for a run today, but feeling really unwell, so slept most of the day and am back in bed again! Hopefully I am just a bit run down and will bounce back tomorrow. Whoever is going out tonight, have good one x

Tete en l'Air - There should be specific GNR plans I think on their website, but your idea of doing more exercise gradually is a good one. If you are doing the 3 peaks, I'd suggest you get or borrow some walking poles as these take the pressure of the knees when going down hill. Also look up the parkrun website and see if there are any close to where you live. Near me people do a 10k round the park at 9am every Saturday. Registration to parkrun is free and I think you can check your times each time you race as you have a unique barcode. And I remember that Runners World website is good but lots of it is only available if you subscribe to the magazine.0

Thanks LittleMiss and NorthernLas
I've heard of that Parkrunsite before I think, and I seem to remember there is a run at a nearby park... Will look into it!
About the walking poles - I have always wondered about them. They seem to me to just be one more thing to have to co-ordinate on the hills and I's imagined them to get in the way... Something to bear in mind though thanks!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0
