  • Hi Nerak,

Aches ans pains will be the order of the day until you have run for a while, but it really is worth getting your feet checked and prpoer shoes fitted.
I ended up buying cheaper shoes that fitted better!, but if you think how much other stuff like gym membership is, you can run outside and get fitter, and buy the right gear at less money!

your times look very good if you are a beginner, well done.

socks are a good investment...sportsworld are fine!

your plan of a year for a half is very realistic and well thought out. i would suggest that you could probably get ready a lot quicker than that at the pace you are at already, but why not take your time.

have a look at " Park Runs" , for a nice, chilled intro to racing!

Another 8 miles completed in Southend, 6 miles tomorrow, then 8 Monday, Then rest, Then a 10 on Weds.

    Hello Mascott,
Thanks for your reply. I think i will do the sock route to see if that helps along with removing the offending edge of hard skin that i think is causing the problem. If not then i will pay a visit to the running shop we have here, think it is called Run4it......always steered clear as it looks expensive. My gym membership is student offpeak so quite cheap and it is also my lifeline for seeing other human beings and making sure i don't sit and study all day long as do that from home! Strangely love it too, so would be loathe to give that up.

It's funny to read someone running 8 miles, i can't imagine managing that!

I done another 3 miles on Friday, so 9 miles over the week. I did have a look at the parkruns site before, but is not in my town :-(

The big question is how i will manage when i get outdoors instead of treadmill.....waiting for slightly better weather for that though hehe

Hi guys! 12 weeks til London......so time to start reporting in again!

12 miles done today - my legs felt very heavy, but I did the distance.....and that will do me nicely!

I think I may ache somewhat tomorrow, but hey ho, no pain no gain!!

  • Nerak,

Understand that gym is your thing, so just enjoy, but I find running outdoors so much more interesting. You can plan different routes, and think about races etc. And hills get you fitter, (if they dont kill you first) but at this stage, just go with what works for you....

Nice one Hypno, time to start upping those miles eh!!... Have to say I havent missed the 3 hour training runs this winter!

Hi gang, this is it! I am officially in training for the Wilmslow Half and am going to run it in under two hours. How is this going to happen? Training and nutrition, me thinks. Loosing a stone and training (running and strength) should do it.

Today was a day for the gym - done my circuits and feeling very good...well it is five hours later.

Expect a post from me six days a week.

    Hey,
I am looking forward to running outdoors, and finding a nice scenic route to occupy my mind. Thats the bad thing with treadmill, if i turn to look at something i about lose my balance....now that would be mortifying!!

I am so impressed at the distances you guys are all running, it is working as a good incentive for me!

I managed my 3 miles today in 26.58 seconds, so happy with that for now!

Good luck to everyone with the training!

Blimey, 3 miles in 26 seconds - I'd be happy with that too :rotfl:

Just been pointed in the direction of this thread by Marru - so here I am.

Will try and do some catch-up reading tomorrow, but for now I'll just post a little about where I'm up to and what got me going.

Last year my DD did a Race For Life 5k, but most of it was more a fast walk than the slow waddle type run she kept trying to break into. After she finished she announced I should do one 'next year' (which is now this year), and I said I wasn't going to unless I could run the entire course - which seemed unlikely.

So at the end of May 2010 I started running
In June 2010 I joined the local running club
By July 2010 I'd changed my target from a 5km RFL to a 10km RFL - as 5km seemed far too easy

    Since then I've done......

a 5 mile race on 17th October 2010 (with a bad leg, which was diagnosed by a sports physio as soon as I hobbled back to the meeting point as a shin splint!). due to my leg my personal target was just to get round under my own steam, and I recorded a time of 56:05 on what was an almost totally flat course on road

a 10km race in aid of Children In Need on 14th November 2010, despite my leg still playing up at times. recorded a time of 1:07:00 on a mixed terrain course

a 5 mile race in aid of Help Our Heroes on 21st November 2010, which was a nasty (mixed terrain) course for uphills - and my leg started to ache again part way round. but I recorded a time of 52:30, so a definite improvement on my first race

a 10km race yesterday (Sunday). I managed this one in 58:59, which gives me a sub-hour personal best for the distance (and at 9:30/mile my fastest ever average pace on any run I've done to date). This really made my birthday a good one - especially as it was one that changed my age category, meaning I was the youngest runner in my group !!!! (Still didn't come first in my category, but that doesn't matter to me)

I'm now in training for a half-marathon on 19th June, and am hunting through various race calendar sites to try and find a couple of reasonably local 10 mile races I can fit in before then. I'm going 'head-to-head' with my younger brother in the half - the only issue (for me) being that he used to run half-marathons on a reasonably regular basis, and has even done a full marathon. However (and to my benefit) he's not done any running for years, and is finding it hard to kick-start his training ;)

Before the half-marathon I already have a 5km 'members only' race this coming Saturday that the club have arranged, and a 5 mile open one they organise every year on 10th April.

For after the half-marathon I've booked my place on the 10km RFL in Heaton Park (Manchester) on 9th July, and the club have an open 5km race (which is another cancer charity fundraiser) on 10th July - so that's going to be a busy weekend for me
