  • Another 6.5K run this morning. I found it especially hard. I have been trying to do some crosstraining as recommended in all the books, so using the shred which I first heard of on here. Only done it twice but I don't think my rolls of fat are used to being attacked from all sides!:D
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

    Hello folks!
I hope you don't mind my joining you all here? I decided to attempt my 1st half marathon this year, along with my other 'aim' to be debt free, so was pleased to see this thread! :-)

Last years resolution was to get fit, so joined gym and still maintain my 3-4 times a week visits. the past few years i have done the Race for Life so this seems the logical next step.

So far this week i have been on the treadmill twice, and managed 3km both times. However, pleased as i was this took me 27 mins at 6km/h and i have no idea how i will manage to improve on this!

Oooh, and what is this 'shred' i have read about? Might this help me?

I will be away from home this weekend so no gym, but will take my running shoes and find a scenic route! I have installed RunKeeper app on my phone, so should get an idea of how far i manage, speed etc!

Had a wonderful run yesterday - feeling strong. All the circuits I am doing seem to be paying off. Still heavy though but there are three months till Wilmslow Half.

Macgirl, are you happy with your Garmin? Have been thinking of getting one.

Yes, I really like it. THIS is the one I've got and it does everything I need it to. The mile times and calories burnt is very motivating. I've not yet programmed it to my race plan, but will try tomorrow and let you know.

I also have a Polar HRM that I got from Argos for about 40 quid. It was fine for heart rate and timing runs, plus it can be worn as a watch. The Garmin I only use while running. Hope that helps :)

No runs for me this week. My work has prevented it, but will do 2 this weekend. I have a 10k at the end of the month, then a half mid Feb

This morning I went running with my fast friend. Rather amazing really - I ran much faster and she was out for much longer. If we keep it up great things might happen.

Mac, does your Garmin tell you where you are? Are how to get where you may be going? Also have been thinking for sometime now to tell you that the cals that it tells you you use are a bit on the high side. We use between 100-120 cals a mile (this can vary a bit depending on weight and how muscular one is but generally works).

    Take care all

    Hello all!

Hmmm, not quite got into my plan yet...Last week only did the one run,one shred, but did do a 30mile cycle trip on Saturday. However, I really need to get back into a routine of going out running more after work. I didn't feel very well on Thursday so came home early and went to bed and on Friday my bf arrived home at the same time as me...

So another gym visit, another treadmill victory (albeit minor)! :j
Today i managed to set the thing to miles instead of km which i prefer. So i managed to do 3 miles in 26.55 mins, running at 6.5 mph which is around 9 minutes per mile...how is this for a beginner?

I also booked an appointment with a personal trainer at the gym to make me a new program using the new equipment they have in. Petrified at the thought if i am honest but i do believe it will help me with the whole running thing and make my time at the gym more productive. I might add that this 1st appointment comes free :T

Hope you are all doing well with your new year runs!

Hi peeps, it was THE HILL for me tonight. Ten times up and down and small hill should amount to something. Strangely enough by the eight climb I was really enjoying myself - and providing a good spectancle to the people who live there.

Tomorrow I am away traveling again - will take my running gear with me this time and will run in Brussels and then in Rome. Anything to keep sane and even simply alive.

    Welcome Nerak

You will find some advice here, and many other places, just stick at it, and remember, the runs that hurt, and seem too tough are the ones that do the work... then slowly the runs get easier.

    8 miles today for me

So, 1x6miles, 1x8miles and about 100 miles cycling this week,,, oh and a round of golf!

    Good luck to all!

Ok, so this week i've been to the gym twice, Monday and today i set treadmill to 3 miles, at 6.5 mph and done it in 26.55 mins, and 26.25 mins. so around 9 minute miles. Is this ok for beginner?

Also came to the decision to change to the 10 k run this year and aim to do the half marathon next year. My friend i am doing this with has dodgy knees so has just started a gentle jog. Not sure how that will go, but i am so far very motivated to improve my speed/distance so will continue on.

On a money saving point i put my 1st 6 pound coins in my sealed pot :j

Can i ask, what shoes do you all wear? I have a pair of Asics that i find good, i bought them after my last attempt at running which caused horrible pain near my knee. My feet supinate, and the shoes have appeared to have rectified this. Today though i felt my soles were chaffing a bit, maybe invest in some better sports socks.....grrrrr more money!
