My plan to run every other day in the hols has been well and truly thawted. I did week 9 run 1 of the G28K last Saturday before the snow. Then we had thick snow which made running impossible. My hubby belongs to the gym so I got him to ask if I could do some "one off" runs there. He came back and said there was a "package" of 6 visits for £20. He would buy it for me for Christmas. I was really pleased and we duly trudged down to the gym on foot only to be told we were misinformed and it would be £6 a visit. Sorry but the money saver in me refused to pay and I trudged home again:(
I then spent hours online tracking down what must be some of the last pairs of ice grips in the country for running in and my hubby is buying those instead:p
This morning I thought I would try a run on the roads as we had had a bit of a thaw but the ice was back in avengance. Even running in the actual road it was too icy. So when I got to our local open farm I turned off and went onto the sea wall which was marginally better. In the partial thaw bits of mud had appeared on top of the ice which gave me some grip. Then my heart rate monitor stopped transmitting:mad:. I have only just changed the battery. I took it off and tried to find a puddle to wet the electrodes. Of course all puddles were covered in ice, so I jumped up and down until the ice broke to get some water. If there had been anyone to see me I am sure they would have thought I was barking mad. Anyway the monitor worked again for a few minutes and then packed up again. I suppose I shall have to waste a whole load of time finding out how to fix it or send it back. I ran all the way home. The north wind was bitter and funnily enough I didn't see anyone else running out there today. Still at least I can have some choccies tonight without feeling guilty:D
If anyone else has a polar heart monitor and has had a similar experience with the transmitter please let me know.
Good luck to anyone runningEnough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0 -
Happy Christmas runners! I'll be a regular in the New Year as I embark on Project ME.
Have a good one and be careful on the ice xx0 -
Hi
Can I join you guys. I am supposed to be attempting the C 2 5K but had a bad knee and then the blooming snow and ice has put it all on hold. I can't wait to get back out there but as it has been so long and I'd barely even started I am going to get back to the start again.
In the time I have been out a new path has been built on my route so can't wait to get out without having to cross any roads (simple things eh!)
Can I also ask a stupid question. i use my iphone when I go running - where do you all keep yours? I feel awkward holding it and my pockets don't have zipsEst. debt free day April 2016 (ish) Debt at June 2010 £34,247.13Debt at Dec 2011 £27,499.09 (19.7% paid off)Working together with DH on our debts (twindad07)Long haulers supporters DFW #2560 -

Hi , and welcome, I am sure you will be made welcome! Its a really good way to meet starter runners on here, I found this site 2 years ago and it helped me become a regular runner.
My top tip is cycle tops. They are stretchy and comfortable but they come with the bonus of a pocket or two around the small of the back. You can get long/short sleeve ones, and waterproof/windproof ones. If you want cheap. The Karrimor ones at Sportsworld are ok
Good ones but a bit more are Altura, or Endura both of which are well made!

I use an ipod touch. I bought a case that had a belt clip on and i stick it in my trousers. You can buy arm bands but for some reason i find it more comfortable around my waist.Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0

Thank you for the welcomes.
I have just been out for a run/walk/jog/slide in the snow! Week 1 Day 2 so looking forward to gettting back out on boxing day.
The Karrimor stuff is crazily cheap so that is me happy! I have lost quite a bit of weight over the last couple of months and am still going so I don't want to spend too much money until I know what clothes size I will end up at so these look fab for now. I have bought a cheap arm band thing from ebay so will see how I get on with that when it arrives

Morning everyone and a happy Christmas. My yaxtrax ice grippers arrived on Christmas eve. This morning it was beautifully sunny but -4 degrees. I decided to try out my icegrips and new water bottle on the sea wall. I had to walk to the entrance to the fens and then try to get my ice grips on.(Could not put them on before as the pavements now had sufficieltly melted before freezing again to have been risky in case I damaged them.) I could not get them on standing up so I had to sit down on a seat in the orchard. Small mistake because this of course made my trousers wet which then promptly froze whilst still on me whilst on the sea wall:eek: Lets just say it felt interesting like having a book stuffed down your trousers.
Other than that it was amazing. It was totally deserted very white and very cold but beautifully sunny. The grippers worked brilliantly and I could even run across the iced puddles in the tractor ruts. I felt sorry for the sheep who all run towards me obviuosly thinking I was bringing food.
Week 9 run 3 done. Week 10 is a 50 minute run non-stop. Why does that sound so much more daunting than two 25 minute runs with a two minute walk imbetween?????????
Then I will have to start the freeway to 10K.:D
Happy running everyone.Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0 -
Hi guys,
today was a very good 'move around' day. This morning did 30 min very slippery run but a lovely one; the freshness of the cold air and the white really cleans one's soul, I find. After that we went for a walk with frinds and walked about 9 miles.
