  • Back at work now so unfortunately the amount of running I can fit in has dropped down. Managed just over 5k last night, but I am concerned about what I'm going to do when it starts getting dark in the evening. I won't be wanting to run around the lanes so I'm not sure what I'll do. Any ideas???

  • Just recovering from week 4 on G28K. Decided to miss out a couple of weeks as it was the weekend and to see if I could manage a longer run. Was a challenge however managed to run really quick on the last interval which was a nice surprise.

Another planned for tomorrow to make 4 runs this week in total

i am really enjoying this running malarky ... the girl i am running with has an ankle injury so we are only running very short distances ... part of me wants to carry on and really stretch myself and see how far i can go (not very the lungs wont take it ) ... but we started this together and i am sure there will be times when i cant run as far

Years ago I bought a bought The Non-Runners Marathon Trainer

In it they described a footstrike as neither ball or heel - but a rolling motion so your style should be smooth and continuous.
Upper body leaning forward slightly, with arms midway between waist and knees - I find this unnatural personally. It's sometime since I read it but if I see it knocking around, I'll see of there are any more tips for you :)

Ran 6 miles this morning. It was very hard work for some reason, think I need a few new routes to liven things up a bit and perhaps join a club for safety's sake at least.

As planned it was swimming for me today - about 40 lengths (25 m swimming pool) - the arithmetic defeats me. But I would like to tell you a story if I may. Remember I was telling you about the teenage lads who were shouting at me that I should do weight lifting rather than running? Well, I shared this with a friend - male friend - who does triathlons and often wins.

How surprised I was when he told me the same happened to him. He just looked at the lads, smiled and said "Shut it or I'll shag you.". Can you imagine?

Regretfully, as a woman this route is not opened to me - who knows whether they will see it as a threat or a promise.

  • Good grief Firewalker, luckily for me when I ran round past the skate park this afternoon no-one shouted at me as I ran past the smokers, skaters, bmx-ers - well behaved indeed

Feeling ok tonight after the run this afternoon, mind you I sat down for a couple of hours when I got back to recover

  • Good Evening All,

Was doing the usual evening perusal of MSE when I came across this thread, I must admit I have read it with admiration for everyones determination and running ability! I am fairly new to 'getting fit' again and running. I'm following the couch to 10k iphone application programme however I started on week 3 (run 2 mins, walk 3) because I thought (!) I was fairly fit and have just moved into week 4. I have only been out three times and am finding it suitably challenging, particularly with breathing technique (occassional stitches and quite breathless towards the end of 2 minutes running). Any suggestions for a newbie would be very welcome!

I have two targets, firstly to improve my fitness to the point where I can jog 10k comfortably and secondly I really want to join the RAF which means I would need to be able to run a shorter distance (2.4k) in 14mins 26seconds. Ideally even faster so I can ace it :D

Any advice for a newbie very much welcome! x

Hi Emily :hello: and welcome to the thread

I only started running about 6 years ago, so am not an expert, but I started running for as long as I could (a few minutes :o) then fast walking until I could run all the way around the block - probably half a mile and built it up that way.
10k is quite a distance and you might find it easier to aim for 5k first. There are Park Runs in lots of towns and Cities which happen every week and are free and you might find running with others more motivating.

The one thing I'd say is go at your own pace and stick at it even when you really don't want to go out and run, after 10 minutes you'll be so glad you did! Good luck :)
