2.8lbs loss for me this week please. Quite happy with that as was only able to run once (aiming for twice a week) and no time to cycle (due to busy busy busy at work). I did our run route lat night without stopping the whole way round which was a great achievement. Today was able to go out on a Boris Bike at lunchtime and did 14km (didn't plan to got that far or for that long - oops!) so I am happy with that.
Going abroad tomorrow for a long weekend so hope not to post a gain this time next week - we will see! Have a good week everyone - I'llkeep up with you all while I am away.0 -
Its a tough one victory it really is. I dont agree with telling your child they are fat or even incinuating they need to go on a diet, i would change their diet without even mentioning it. When youre a teenager your parents are a security blanket, and if they then turn round and say something hurtful it feels like youre alone in the world and no one has your back. That really isnt a good place to be in, and it certainly would make you eat.
I come from the opinion that food is really being blown well out of proportion for everyone. I hate to think what its going to be like in the future because i can see soooooo many eating dissorders arise from this constant pressure to be thin, to go on a diet to not eat junk ect. I think almost everyone could eat better and we all know this, but this is the sad fact of the society we live in, that our lives are so fast passed we have to grab a ready meal and eat rubbish to save a few minutes in our day.
I would just tread carefully, your son is a growing lad and boys do eat alot in their teens. I also live by the fact that life is way too short....there are too many people right now going through some horrible !!!! and here we all are critiquing how much cereal someone has in their bowl. You should see matts bowl, it spills over the sides when he eats it! But then its breakfast, better to have a big breakie than a big dinner! Sorry for the rant ha.0 -

its probably only telling us all what we already know, but it dont hurt to be reminded occasionally
actually it doesn't
there sample size was tiny and the duration of the sample was also very short so lots of random factors could have influenced this test
there have been much larger tests over longer period of time (using MRI scans) that have shown this has no affect as the stomach drains the water out very fast, but if you want to feel full for longer that you need to suspend food in the water ie a soup, there's been recent research that shows the stomach needs to be stretched for about 20 mins to trigger the full hormone, slower eating speed helps as you have more time to trigger the hormone.
this might be interesting, well worth a watch, start at 2.09 in

2.8lb loss this week taking me to 140lbs - 10 stone :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j this was especially good as I had stolen a day for the salt retention, and being on holiday had 2 curry's, a roast dinner oh and 2 ice creams on days out
err i didn't mention those did i :rotfl:
I spent most of my childhood under a dietician, although from the pics of me i was very skinny by modern kid standards
Its a waste of time, the two things that would have helped me would have been
1) to explain proper nutrition, calorie intake and exercise (my parents knew !!!! all about food)
2) remove the abusive father ....0 -
-1lb for me. Not the best, but still in right direction, the gain must be coming next week :rotfl:
Victory, I'm with Vix on this one hon. Be very careful with your teenage son. It seems to be so easy to push them over the edge and have them end up with an eating disorder. My son is a skinny wee thing, but should he get a wee bit overweight, I'm pretty sure he would go that way, he won't even wear a coat in winter because it makes him "look" fat  On the other side, I would love my DD to lose a few pounds, but she's not ready to tackle it, so I won't nag her. I know she'll have her light bulb moment when she's ready.
I know they say fat kids lead to fat adults, but it's not always the case. My DS was a chubby little blighter, now he's hit his teenage years and he's gangly. My DD and myself were skinny wee things, oh for the days when I used to be called sparrow legs, how I wish i could go back :rotfl: and we've both ended up a wee bit on the larger size.
Think I would be more tempted for education for him and a change of diet for the whole family. Like cutting out the sugar and fats. Explaining that it's healthier and not just because your son has put on a bit of weight.
Hark at us, we know from your previous posts that you wouldn't do that anyhoo, but maybe others reading it will get some insight from it
4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Argh. 2lb gain. definately blaming totm this week as i feel about 100 stone!! Still, nothing like seeing a MASSIVE number on the scales and realising that you need to take it all more seriously. I dont want to be on a diet all my life. i need to sort out my boredom and comfort eating.
fred, please can you take me out of the Aug challenge? it's a bit of a no hoper! But please leave me on the chart. i'll re-start the 5lb challenege in Sept when I am not so far behind, if that's ok??Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

Hello all, more success, so please alter the result I posted yesterday:
Wednesday, I weigh 74 kg. That means, a loss of 0.8 kg from last Wednesday.
I now weigh 11 st 9.1 lbs. So, approx 1 3/4 lbs from last Wednesday.
I seemed to stick around the same point for soooo many months. It would have been incredibly easy for me to jack it all in, say 'I'm the weight I am because of my age, can't do anything about it, what does it matter anyway, who cares what I look like' and have another biscuit with my tea. I was not minded to do any of that. I knew I was on the right lines, eating sensibly and healthily even if it did not show up on the scales. My logical brain told me that it must work eventually because I was creating a calorie deficit and also improving my muscles (which burn up calories, one of the reasons for weight gain in later life is loss of muscle). Some people eat because they're unhappy, because they're lonely, because they're bored, any of those things, but none of that applies to me. I don't need food to make me happy and put some meaning into my life.
The discussion about children's weight is very interesting. There has been a Channel 4 series 'The Hospital' and the last episode on Monday evening dealt with liver failure and liver transplants at King's Collage Hospital. The liver is a wonderful organ - it deals with everything that goes through the body and is the only organ that can regenerate itself, only many people in today's world are really insulting their livers what with heavy drinking, binge drinking, eating the wrong kinds of food etc. Anyway, there was a little lad on there who had been diagnosed with fatty liver disease at a very young age. He'll never be able to get drunk, not even get tipsy, as he said - but he has grabbed the problem and is dealing with it by changing the way he eats, is taking more exercise - 'I'm always in the gym' as he said - and his most recent liver scan shows improvement. I really applauded that little lad, who's only about 14 now.
My generation has, in terms of life assurance, been called the 'Golden Cohort' and if we succeed in living past 65 then we have a long life expectancy projected. Contrast this with what one of the consultants at the Mayday Hospital said when speaking about diabetes - 'there's a generation of children who will die before their parents'. The reason for our health and longevity is that we grew up in a time of rationing. Everyone had just enough food but not too much, and it was mostly locally-produced and home-cooked. To get the 4 ounces of sweets a week we walked, as a family, to the next village 2 miles away. I often wonder now how I managed to walk home that same 2 miles after school without anything to eat between midday dinner and getting home. It just didn't occur to me to need anything to eat until tea-time at home! And we walked or cycled everywhere as a matter of course. Disadvantages: I never learned to swim - children nowadays are so lucky to learn to swim at a very young age. Holidays didn't exist - the Sunday school day-trip to Scarborough was all there was (that was where I had the 'near-drowning experience' which has made it so difficult to learn to swim, I got knocked off my feet by a wave when paddling. I'm still dealing with that fear!)
I think if you give a child healthy food and limit the kind of 'junk' that is so prevalent now, and also limit sweets and sweet drinks, along with encouraging exercise, you don't need to put the child on a 'diet', in fact you shouldn't do so.
