The EAR for boys aged seven to 10 years is 1970 kcal per day, and for girls, 1740 kcal per day.
Quite surprised it is that much but I guess it must have to do with them growing all the time, that is more cals than I consume in a day but I stopped growing many a year ago, well height wise anyway:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Victory sounds like you are thinking this through a lot and being very careful with your son's feelings, which is great.
Even though the article you read said 'no mollycoddling' I find it hard to belive it recommended telling kids they're fat! no child responds well to negativity/criticism, but they always respond well to praise though.
you can't blame your son, it's not entirely his fault. He is a child and put simply probably doesn't know better. Kids do eat a load of rubbish!
And all they see on TV is how nice sweets are!
I ate a load of sugary rubbish as a kid but I was lucky in that i did gymnastics, dancing and, swimming which kept me slim, but when I got to senior school i quit the exercise but kept eating badly and put on weight. To be honest, no one ever told me not to! I do think that there is definately a lack of education sometimes which means kids dont realise the connection between health, weigth and food. So rather than restrict his diet too harshly, it might be an idea to encourage exercise and make a compromise with the sweets.
Perhaps he could get a bike and do some cycling? something you could do together or he could do with his brothers??
does he swim? swimming lessons are great. any local footie/rugby teams?
It's good you have noticed early and have got the chance to nip it in the bud, but on the other hand by restricting food too much you can cause the same problem, in that sweets and sugary things are then regarded as a 'treat' and overeaten whenever available. Maybe portion control would help? like you can have 3 biscuits, not 5. Slowly and gently might make it easier.
Just my 2 cents, i hope this has helped a bit. I do worry that my children will inherit my bad habits, as i have my parents'. I wish I could go back and tell my 13 year old self 'if you keep eating doghnuts at breaktime you're going to end up struggling to diet and be slim'!Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

an article in todays express...
CLICK ME
its probably only telling us all what we already know, but it dont hurt to be reminded occasionally
Vixtar - wont be long before you lose another inch if you keep that up :-)
Betty - i agree, several small meals spread out over the day is the way to go! you'll have to work out how you can fit them in to your routine, but i suggest to keep them fairly evenly spaced apart and each of similar size. For myself, i find it easy to skip bfast so my first one is at noon then every 3 hours until midnight, although some people say i shouldnt eat late and some say i shouldnt skip bfast, late at night is when my hunger is the most demanding and early morning when i can easily miss out a meal. You just gotta work out a plan that fits around how you feel yourself :-) good luck with it
Bb - hope youre feeling better soon. it was a good idea to do that squirrelling
MC- congratulations!
Fellpony - i'm thinking of you. erm well actually i'm thinking of you eating two scrummy jamaican ginger cakes all covered in custard, but it's near enough ;-)
Victory - purple, orange, bright green it doesnt make any difference, when the size of a small planet, like me, I gotta take whatever fits. If you can walk in a shop and buy off the rack then you dont know how lucky you are! ;-) Well done on your sons results too.0 -
The article was not saying to go and say to your child 'hey you are fat' I so wish I kept it and could have scanned it on, it was so well writen, it was just trying to say that a child should not be told all is o.k and you leave it because kids are cruel at school, yes you can protect them behind closed doors etc but the real world is out there and they are going to suffer:D
That is def what he needs more exercise, he is very partial to the sofa:D
His diet is going to be cut back, sweets and junk are out and more what I eat is in, sure he will have them at school disco, parties, this coming weekend when we go to my SIL 60th birthday bash they will be less of the norm and more of a treat as I do.
I hear what you are saying about restricting the sweets and he can over eat on them etc, I understand wholy what you are saying no child is going to be obedient in that case and will prob be crafty or go out to his friends house to eat them etc but he has to know that on the whole he can have but he has to cut back drastically so that there is a weight loss and also for health reasons, all his fat is around his stomach and that at the age of 10 or whatever age is dangerous and I am already diabetic and would never ever wish him anything like me.:D
I am not worried about him being slim as he has a stocky build from kick off I am worried about him going on much longer being this over weight for a young child and not stopping it.
I do know exactly his weight, how much over weight he is, he has asked me not to put it up here and I respect that, he knows we chat, he knows I am telling you all, he knows he has a problem, he wants veg and fruit and cycling and swimming and he knows we are just loving him and helping him not bullying him and making him feel bad, he knows I love him endlessly and we have chatted and he sees it is a prob, not a huge one at the mo but could be and we can do something about it now:D
I have a photo of his own made bowl of cereal he had, there was no way he could add milk to it, it was over flowing so much with the cereal when he was not looking I took a pic, I would not put it on here as he does not know about it and would not want to embarass him in any way but it was huuuuuuuuuuuugeeeeeeeee!!!!!0 -
sounds like you're a lovely caring mum victory and it's good to know he is happy to talk about it with you.Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

Vic, is this what you were looking for? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1302305/Chubby-children-told-theyre-fat---I-ought-know--I-one.htmlI caught him spooning sugar into his mouth from the sugar pot in the kitchen:eek:
been there, done that!
next stop hundreds and thousands!
the possibilities are endless when youre a 30 stone sugar addict!
as for cereal (and porridge covered in golden syrup), I used to own a mixing bowl that was the size of a bucket and well erm you can guess the rest
it feels like ive been doing an awful lot of confessing this afternoon!0 -
well if we're all confessing, i just stuffed a bit of white bread with peanut butter in my mouth and i dont even know why. now i feel sick.Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

puds thank you so much, the cereal bowl has been thrown out, ironically it came free with kellogs cereal in a shape of a football on the outside, green on the inside and very deep, half a pot of cereal easily could fit into it:rotfl::D
I accidently on purpose broke it and threw it out when it accidently fell out of the cupboard all over the kitchen floor;)
puds he has done the hundreds and thousands no longer buying them and the chocolate sprinkles that come free with the capucchino sachets and was mad keen on toffee apples and candlyfloss at the fair, not happened in a long time all that but it has been there for all to see.
I have also found wrappers in his room, no longer now because he knows he does not need to eat secretly or away from us, he can eat whatever he wants, whenever but little, rarely, treat wise and in proportion, to open at xmas a box of biscuits say or a tin of quality street and he is taking hand fuls rather than a few and enjoying those is wrong, he just needs to know he does not have to scoop his hand in and take the lot.
I used to make fairy cakes and all other sorts of cakes as 'treats' by the end of the day they were all gone, OH said stop and I no longer bake unless it is birthdays etc.
I have talked about my eldest friend before, he is a lovely lad, very much over weight, around 8/9 stone over weight and he is 16, he will tell you they tease him mercilessly at school, he will tell you he has a rough time that he does not get seen as him, he is just a laughing stock wherever he goes, my eldest will tell you they are cruel, rude, ignorant to him because of his size, the lad will tell you he no longer eats infront of anyone, makes out he is not hungry and then eats and eats alone, he will tell you he is scared by all this, it has ruined his teenage years, that all he wants is all the words to stop, for him to be just him and not about his weight but life is cruel out there and he suffers, I would not want that for my child, everytime he tells me another story of his suffering my heart breaks for him, I want to adopt him and help him and tell him not every person he encounters will be this nasty to him but the real world is harsh out there.0 -
Oh Pudding, I wish I had thought of custard with the ginger bread!!
Well having decided I need more direction, I took the bull by the horns and found that Slimming World was having a session tonight in my area. So at half past five I put my trainers on and trudged down the road (on foot!!) and sat and listened to what the consultant had to say, once she had finished I joined up. I am sceptical, but am willing to give it a try. So salmon and couscous with shed loads of peas and brocoli for tea.
Fredsnail can I start from zero again on the charts please!!
Weigh in tonight was 17st 12lb :eek::eek: Quite unhappy that I have put on quite so much but hey ho, back to the drawing board.
Must have been the invisible custard huh Pudding!! :rotfl:You never know how strong you are until you have no other option.0
