Tesco Carrier Bag Policy

OK, so this company are giving themselves a huge Green pat on the back and saving themselves a flipping fortune at the same time by encouraging us not to use their carrier bags. The 1p value of the clubcard point they reward you with for not using their carrier is not going to outweigh the savings for having to manfacture the bags so they are in pocket, appear consumer friendly & lets face it, they are even managing to get advertising out of getting us for not advertsing them by way the commercials all over the TV full of otherwise out-of-work celebs. (I mean, when was the last time you saw Martine Mucheon do any real acting?)

According to the adverts you get a point everytime you use anything other than a new one of their carrier bags. Wheelbarrows, handbags & other shops carriers are promoted as possible alternitives.

I haven't used carrier bags for yonks, preferring to fill up the basket under my sons pushchair first then I have a couple of fabric bags I use. Yippee I thought, they are finally going to reward me! But noooooooooo........they don't have an option on their tills for a pushchair, only other carrier bags/bag for life/wally trolley etc. Presuambly wheelbarrow is on there too a la their adverts. But can I convince the check out staff to give me my point? Nope. They have apparently been told it's for using a alternative carrier bag. Nothing else. Nada. A couple of times I have been to customer services & compalined, the last time 2 supervisors had a disagreement about when they could allocate the "green" ponts!

I am not actually losing sleep over the loss of a few clubcard points. But I am thoroughtly fed up at their false advertising claims. They are projecting themselves as both consumer & environment friendly over this matter, and they are not delivering the goods.

I feel a complaint letter comming on!

I called in to our local Tesco store today for just a loaf, by some miracle I bought just a loaf and the checkout op was putting it in a carrier, I stopped her as it wasn't exactly necessary. Maybe they should have some training as per body shop " do you NEED a bag?"

I want to take a top hat in for a salmon as per the advert...

OH went to Tescos yesterday for my veggie food and they didnt have any bags out. When they asked the checkout OP gave some used bags begrudgingly so I was told.

We do reuse bags we did so that day at Morrions using Tesco bag for life and Wilkos green bags which costs use 50p, but on this occasion we forgot to take them with us.
  • Must admit I had a chuckle when Tescos introduced this as I've been reusing my carrier bags for a while now and always got straange looks from a) other customers and b) the checkout girl.

Are you not just a tiny bit tempted to take a wheelbarrow into Tesco's and try?

If I'd had the same argument as you have with supervisors I'd be very tempted. 'well, thats what happens on the tv' is all you'd have to say. :rotfl:

I keep saying I'm going to go with my suitcase. Thing is - would I only get one point if I'm only using one suitcase or should I get 8 points 'cos I'm saving using 8 carrier bags :D

does it really matter if someone uses their own bags, ive not come across any strange looks before, we always use our own if we have them with us

  • DH went into Tesco today to buy a loaf of bread, the cashier went to put it in a carrier bag and he said to her that it wasn't needed for one loaf - he then asked if he would get a clubcard point for not using a bag and was told that they only give them out if you reuse a bag. He then fished through his pockets and came up with one of those tiny bags that Boots use when you buy something small, put about a 1/4 of the loaf into it as that was all that would fit.....and was given a clubcard point! Madness!!

This seems to be a very good idea from Tescos that hasn't been thought through properly. Surely using no carrier is just as good (if not better?) than re-using an old one?
