Royal Mail £1 Handling fee.

Wasn't having a dig, but I just don't see how that process (correct me if I'm wrong) differs from that of an item that requires a signature from someone that isn't home? As far as I'm aware, if I have to collect an item from the post office because I wasn't home I don't have to pay a fee for collecting it?! Therefore I still believe it's a money making excercise!
items requiring a signature already have a premium on them with a higher price
so you have kinda ruined your argument
charge mail is pulled from the mail streams either by the machines or hand sorters
after that they travel the rest of the journey seperatly
then they have to be checked/priced/cards printed up at revenue protection at the local mail centre
this charge 'pouch' is forwarded to the delivery office
the MC notes the daily charges for that office for audit purposes
at the DO the charges are checked and the cards checked and dated
the companies that have accounts have their charges noted and the items are put out for delivery
the rest are filed and the cards put out on delivery
every week the amount of charges held must be counted,monies collected,charges returned etc and inputted into the computer for the account(not forgetting the time spent arguing at the door/on the phone on bthe injustice of RM daring to charge people)
out of date/refused charges must be endorsed as not called for,labelled and sent to the MC
they then count/check the totals and remove that total from the DO's accounts to set
so the MC total and DO monies collected/charges returned should tally
then all these items are returned to sender or belfast if theres no return address and charged on return(see all the above)
oh and that fee has been set at £1 since i started at RM,so thats 6 years at least.how much has fuel,electric etc risen in that time?
but of course,you could say theres no extra work0 -

Your totally right hadn't thought about the extra charged for signed for etc.and when the process is broken down (totally admit I had no knowledge of it) it does seem to be rather alot of work for what is usually in my case another bill.

they do if you go to the office
there are millions of underpaid tems every week, and its not feasible to be adding loads of details on the off chance someone will pay
They really ought to fill in the gaps on their own cards though
We always used to squabble over who should pick up underpaid items at the office, because they never bothered to enter the recipient's name.
And I would never have trudged 10 minutes in the snow if I'd known it was JUNK mail, and not a PRESENT!Perhaps that's the point... bloody annoying though!

most are done by machine
so it makes its best guess on the details
TBH when i did the charges i liked to tally card to item to confirm we actually have the item
(always fun when someone comes in with a card and the item wasnt in the right pouch!)
and that the details are correct
however that takes time and with cuts its all about 'hours'
so cutting corners suits the management
in my old office the door was open 7am to 7pm
you would be lucky to have a manager past 2pm
so they're not there for most of the grief on the door0 -

Why the frig should one pay to receive a letter sent by someone who was either cheap or misjudged the postage? And by 10p !!!!!!. A £1 surcharge is a lot with everything else going up. :money:0 -
