IIRC it had postage stamps on it.It was my paperwork for the local volenteer service.

well charge mail is charged at 2nd class rates
so if an item is underpaid it will have the difference to 2nd class charged to it
you may have seen franking on items saying revenue protection"
    treat as 2nd class"
this is where enough postage has been paid for 2nd class and not 1st
so the item is downgraded, not charged

Then why was I charged the difference in postage plus one pound handling?
The charity told me they send everthing second class,so therefore the was enough postage on it for second class, therfore I should'nt have been charged.
Academic really as I gave off to the charity director when I returned the paperwork & they refunded the postage.
(To add ,the charity work was collecting vulnerable children in my own car & transporting them to & from school or to appointments)

if an item carries enough postage then it doesnt get cvharged
however didi it have enough for a large letter 2nd class opposed to a normal letter 2nd class?

the worst ones (and i hated charging them) were the folks who underpaid freepost envelopes
once you add postage ot a freepost then the freepost is negated
so often it would be charities or samll groups/campaigns and you are charging them even though they have a freepost

To be honest,I'm not sure if the second class postage was correct,I never asked them but you would think that they would've known, especially with all the bumf the PO put out over the charges.

Do you not at least get to see what it is before agreeing to pay the £1??

I'd probably pay the £1, then have a good rant at the person who sent it.

I asked and they were to be fair very nice about it and let me have a look, but there was no clue on the rather official looking letter, so I paid, turned out to be a load of tut! So I rang the sender and complained lol ;)

    now in your privitised utopia
what will the prices be and what will the set up be regarding a set price for anywhere in the UK?
bearing in mind you will still need to carry competitors mail at a dicounted rate

    could be privatised and regulated.

that is why now the RM are carrying all this TNT mail.

no state run dept should be run like this, i am self employed if my service is poor what do you suppose happens???

you realise RM lose money on many items?
downstream access mail like TNT is often delivered at a loss
so wheres the money for this private company to run RM?

you maybe self employed, but you dont have to do work for the self employed guy down the road at a loss

i dont get the 'that is why RM carry TNT mail'
why would a private company want to deliver competiors mail for a regulated fee?

I would go and pay the £1, it may a cheque for thousands of pounds
    ;) How likely is that?
  • I have recieved a notice asking for 32p plus £1 handling.
    I wont pay it.

A letter can get from Glasgow to Southampton for 40p, but it costs a £1 to put it through my door a second time??.....that's totally unjustified.

The banks have been pulled over the coals for "unreasonable cahrges" - Royal mail should be too.

I frequently help out my postie by taking parcels for the neighbours if they are out, but from now on i will charge him a handling fee before agree to help him!

good for you,as is your choice

thats called universal pricing. it doesnt mean it costs 40p to provide the service. it costs £1 because the idiot that sent the letter put no postage on it. so it was pulled from the mail stream and manually handled/charged(£1.32 is a letter with no stamp)

rightly so,except you are under no obligation to pay the RM fee. yet felt you needed a little online cry about it

no,you help your neighbours. so stop doing it. feel better not doing it?
