I received a card recently advising I had to pay 50p postage and £1 handling fee charge.
I wasn't expecting anything in particular so went to the RM DO and asked to see the letter/package before paying and accepting it. The staff refused to let me see it. Can they do that or are they obliged to give me info on where it's come from/who posted it/what it is ?

OK thanks. What concerns me is that this could possibly be junk mail or it is more than likely to be from a bonafide sender?

I have to write these 'surcharge' cards out as part of my duty at work. To be honest not many are junk though there are a lot that I reckon are newsletters from parish councils & clubs etc. The worst offenders in my opinion are dentists, get a lot of postcard type items saying people need to book a check up.

I had to pay to pick up a glossy cardboard mass-mailing from a supplier who put standard stamps on large letters. It took me an hour and £1.20-odd to collect what was effectively junk mail. I called the company who immediately knew what I was talking about as they had had hundreds of other complaints. They sent me a cheque for the cash, and grovelled. I told them never to contact me again, they said many former customers had told them the same. It must have cost them thousands to remedy a few tens of pounds of corner-cutting.

If it does turn out to be junk, you could call up the sending company and bawl them out - you'll be one of many, and they'll deserve it!

I had one recently, the effort was just having to deal with it. Anyway 48 hours later Boots wrote a letter, explaining it was their fault, to not collect it, and they were crediting my bank account with £1.22 anyway in case had already collected it (have contact lens plan with them). Swift corrective action, Boots!
