Royal Mail £1 Handling fee.

I just received a card saying I have to pay £1.10 to collect a undelivered letter. Apparently the sender didn't put enough postage on the letter. 10p less then it should have been and because of this, the RM is adding £1 as a handling fee. I am refusing to pay it.
If I don't go and pay to collect, will they return the letter to sender? Or would they just post it to me?
Any advice?

I was in this situation once and the guy at the post office told me if I didn't want to pay, then they would return it to the sender.
In this instance I did pay, but it would seem if you refuse, they'll return it.0 -
If they can't work out who the sender is it will be destroyed. If they can it will be returned.
Whoever sent it 'forgot' it was a large letter, not a standard one.0 -

I had this a while ago, not knowing what the letter was I went and paid. I then rang the sender and had a major rant (I was having a bad day and it was a nursery school brochure, I told them if they couldn't get something so simple right there was no way I was placing my daughter in their care! Ooops).
Anyway they sent me the £1.14 I had, had to pay as 'compensation' lol!
Perhaps you could ask to see the letter to see if you can work out who its from before you pay?
What is the £1 handling fee for, it's not as if they have to do anymore work than if they are unable to deliver something that requires a signature! All money making IMO :mad:Started comping again Sept 2013
Best wins: Currys wishlist, 3 Laptop's, a PS4 and an Espresso machine • fridge freezer • £100 M&S vouchers
46 wins totalling approx £3000 since September 2013.•* Thank you to everyone that posts competitions*•.:A0 -

The time & thus money spent on:
Filling in the form
returning it to the depot
putting it on a shelf
the guy working behind the counter when you come to collect it
and the overheads of the building the shelf & counter are in0 -
I had this a couple of years back. I paid the £1 online, so not too much hassle.
When it arrived the next day, I wasn't very happy though, it was a very cheap (we are talking worth 10p) Xmas card from my mates mum. When I told him, he said his mum was short of cash, so posted several cards, without any stamps on them.
It happened again this year, but this time I didn't pay the £1 as I wasn't getting caught twice.
What didn't help was there was no indication on the card the first time as to what it was. They should put a letter on the card i.e. L - Letter, P- Parcel. Second time it had an L on it, so knew it was very likely to be another cheap Xmas card.0 -
It is not RMs fault if the sender fails to pay the correct postage. £1 is hardly worth arguing about. I am more concerned with the time wasted having to go collect the item. My time is worth more to me."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
