Do you not at least get to see what it is before agreeing to pay the £1??

I'd probably pay the £1, then have a good rant at the person who sent it.

just go in and ask to see it
then pay your fee if you want it

I can't work out why people are angry at RM over this instead of the senders who don't bother to find out the correct postage for their items?

Because a lot of the time it's the Post Office charging incorrectly. I've had stuff arrive that's been 'underpaid' and when I've finally got my hands on it, it's got a printed PO label on it (in which case I've always told the sender what's happened so that they can complain!). Sometimes the PO staff just guess whether it's a large letter or a parcel and get it wrong.

    1. a freebie sent out as a letter but was large letter 10p short £1 charge. did not collect

    2. registered 1st class sent out, post office forgot to put the printed postage in the top corner, £3.29 charge, when already paid. result i paid, got copy of proof postage then billed post office £3.29 charge + £5 taxi fare for collecting..thay paid.

    3. item sent 1st class signed for took 10 days. luckily concert tickets were for the day of arrival.

in all instances you call RM 10p a min get answermachine. when you get a human they tell you they are looking into complaints procedure and apologise for their poor service.

now tell me they are running a business. they want privatising and quick.

That's happened to me as well.I once even took a largish jiffy bag letter to the post office,it was weighed & I paid the correct postage.A few day's later,it was returned to me for insufficient postage.
So on going to the counter I sent it from I asked how could a package that was weighed & correctly costed be returned for insufficient postage.
The answer I got was 'clerical error' or the scales were'ne calibrated correctly.
I even recieved one from a charity who were sending me documents in an A4 envelope.Post office told me the was insufficiant postage for first class, the charity told me they only send things second class & dont use first class at all!
  • They got me with this and mine was 2p under in which case the person on the desk said at that limit its discretionary as to wether they charge. Just my luck they charged me £1.02p for the letter. but i made sure i was prepared .... I took it all in 1ps if it had been 15p+ yeah ok charge but for 2p shows how sad royal mail are!

service round heres crap from them anyway, they cant even manage to post a post card through my letter box without firstly folding it in half!

    .

    now in your privitised utopia
what will the prices be and what will the set up be regarding a set price for anywhere in the UK?
bearing in mind you will still need to carry competitors mail at a dicounted rate
