i'm female and own a couple of pairs of cufflinks. some women's shirts have cuffs that need links.
Ditto to this. If someone gives my OH a pair of cufflinks, he gives them straight to me.
My parents gave me a white gold bracelet from my favourite jewellers (although they don't remember what they got me!) My brother became a father about a week before his 21st so my parents babysat for a weekend (not the weekend of his birthday) and paid for them to go away for some R&R. My sister got jewellery and £210Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0 -
Ooh, also I went on holiday two days after my 21st and my parents gave me spending money and paid for a hotel at the airport.Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0

when i turned 21 both my parents had lost their jobs (very unexpected) about 3 months before so money was tight to say the least.
I got a 'this is your life' book. They did a book with pics in for every year, xmas, birthday, big event throughout my life. 15 years later i still look at it at least once a week. It is the best gift anyone has ever given me full of, love, stories, memories and more. I also got a ring that my Grandparents gave to my mum on her 21st and i would do the same if i ever have a daughter (doubtful with 3 lads running round lol, but hopefully grandkids can have it!)
Anyway, when they both got new jobs (quite soon after my birthday) i was given a sizeable amount of money to pay for me and my best mate to go on holiday and to also help with solicitors fees etc as i was in process of buying my 1st home, but to be honest the book was and is my prized possession - after photos of my kids etc.
Ah i feel all weepy now just thinking about it!0 -
That book sounds like a lovely idea
I've also just remembered, if he won't give you any idea of something he wants, get him one of those daft big keys you get in card shops. I bloody knew someone would get my one for my 18th and someone did, I just looked at it and thought "What the heck am I supposed to do with this?" :rotfl:
Obviously that's not his real present though!0 -

There was an MSE'r who used to buy her son a swarvoski christmas tree ornament each year. The idea being that once he reached 18/21 he had enough ornaments to fill a tree of his own when he moved out (and I *think* she said that they should increase in value? No idea I'm not into crystal).
He'll have his first 'own' xmas tree this year, would fit the bill for you wanting him to have 'something to keep' and he only has to look at it for a couple of weeks each year to remind him of how yours and his present views don't match.0 -
Well I gave up in the end and bought a photo frame. I divided the photo area into two and folded £10 notes into football shirts. I folded 10 of them with one side facing up and 10 of them with the other side facing up so they looked like 2 seperate teams. The 'ref' was a £20 note, which made 21 notes in total. I couldn't quite stretch to two teams of twenties and a £50 Ref,lol, especially given what I'd spent on his other bits as well.(Champagne is half price in Morrisons at the mo and also reduced in Tesco in case it helps anyone.
)
I listed them as 'A Team' and 'B Team' which are what the local teams are informally known by.
So now he has a few quid to either buy something with, or to leave hanging on his wall for emergencies. Not quite an Escher SS, but an ojo original nonetheless and a slightly less boring method of handing over cash compared to the usual cheque in a card. :rotfl: It's also quite MSE-ish as it'll take him forever to unfold the notes ( I also ironed them flat) so he might give up and end up not spending them.

Sounds brilliant! How do you fold £10 notes into football shirts?
Mind you, I like the suggestion of a Christmas Tree to your taste rather than his - do you think I can buy DS1 a pink one for Christmas this year, as it's his first year after moving out? :rotfl: I'm sure he won't bother otherwise ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Someone on here kindly gave me this link a while ago ....http://members.cox.net/crandall11/money/shirt/
I'd forgotten about it until today.Herman - MP for all!0 -
