I think it depends on the individual.

At 21 I wasn't a big fan of jewellery or anything like that, so my parents paid for me to go on holiday.
    Best present ever! :D

Hi for my 21st i was given a white gold Diamond teardrop necklace. It is goregous and i wear it every day. Sorry probably not a lot of help considering you've got a son but wanted to say that things do get used. :-)

Now that he would like. :D

Shame he wont be getting one though. :rotfl:

Thanks for all the replies. Son is earning a decent wage so isn't short of money to go on holiday etc.

He's always been the type of person who prefers an actual gift, something that he wouldn't buy himself simply because it's not practical iyswim, but he'd like anyway.

He's recently bought a new camera and he has an ipod and good phone so those are ruled out.

I like the idea of giving 21 individual gifts....I've found a personalised website that has loads of stuff from the expensive and outrageous to the cheap and cheerful so I think I may get 20 small personalised bits. I'm still stuck on the main thing though.

I'm soooo looking forward to next year's jumper. :rotfl:

My son's both had their coming-of-age on their 18th birthday, DS1 had a good watch then, and DS2 had a really good camera. For their 21st they both got silver cufflinks plus aftershave.

i got a car for my 21st. I was driving around in a battered old metro for a couple of years and new it wouldnt last much longer. My parents had bought a fiat brava from a car auction really cheap that had a good engine but needed loads of new panels, bits of interior etc.

My dad and brother spent 6 weeks working on the car before my birthday, they worked evenings and weekends getting it to a very good condition which meant more to me than anything else! I loved that car.

My brother just wanted the money which he then went and spent on his missus he split up with a couple of months later.

Based on the 3 items above, things I would like but can't really justify (to myself) include: bluetooth headset, ipad, ipod touch, really good gadget/laptop bag (if no brand preference then something like Crumpler might do), digital photo frame, photo printer.

I assume he already has a computer but if he would like a new/another one, my dad bought me a very cute netbook recently. Or, if there are any expensive/luxury brands he likes (I love Radley handbags - is there something equivalent for boys?), then something from their range.

For my 21st, I got a diamond pendant on a chain. Probably not suited to a bloke!
