When you get things personalised and put for example... Happy 21st...and then the date...should the date be the date of birth or the date they are actually 21 iyswim?

Based on the 3 items above, things I would like but can't really justify (to myself) include: bluetooth headset, ipad, ipod touch, really good gadget/laptop bag (if no brand preference then something like Crumpler might do), digital photo frame, photo printer.

I assume he already has a computer but if he would like a new/another one, my dad bought me a very cute netbook recently. Or, if there are any expensive/luxury brands he likes (I love Radley handbags - is there something equivalent for boys?), then something from their range.

For my 21st, I got a diamond pendant on a chain. Probably not suited to a bloke!

Has...bluetooth headset, photo printer and new Sony laptop but doesn't take it anywhere so wouldn't use a bag ( I bought one a couple of years ago and the tags aren't even off it.) ipad/touch would be novely gadgets that would end up in a cupboard in a few weeks or his g/f would end up using. She's a lovely girl but it's not her I want to buy for. :D

Cufflinks are the most obvious jewelrey type gift for a man, and something his gf can't use! Even if he doesn't wear shirts all the time it is nice to have a pair for special occasions. You could get him a really nice shirt to go with them! Is also something you can engrave if you need to.

My friend Max got a porsche carerra 4 and a new flat in london for his 21st. His dads a millionnaire and a bit of a showoff though

I'd go with something sentimental with long lasting value OR something that will give many lasting good memories (which cant always be found in objects but could in holidays/trips etc) or a combination of both?

Max is a bit spoilt so he doesnt really care much about his stuff or his family. Money isnt everything :)

(hes still a good mate though, always gets the round in )

I asked for, and received, a pair of crystal wine glasses for my 21st. I'm not a big fan of birthdays so didn't want to do anything huge but did want something that I could keep until I'm old and gray. Wine glasses were the only thing I could picture always having in my house regardless of my age.

I did the 21 gifts idea for my younger sister's 21st and the look on her face was great. Can't even remember what the gifts were but will always remember her reaction :D

you need to downsize a bit then! Take a look at the DVLA website - you can choose lots of combinations - for B18 and then 3 letters (sons initials) cost me about £300 :D
