What did you get for your son or daughter's 21st birthday?

Looking for inspiration. Thought I was going to buy son a good watch and get it engraved etc but seems his girlfriend has already earmarked that option.
As in many other families, it's tradition in ours to give a good gift for the 21st. It marks the last milestone if you like and then it's all downhill from then on and they either get a jumper or a few quid in a card for birthdays after that. :rotfl:
Anyway, need ideas please.

We gave DS1 a top of the range i-pod which we had engraved. Other friends have given things like heavy silver or gold chains, depending on their offsprings tastes.
Now DS2 is coming up to his 21st, and DS3 is 18 soon (they already have i-pods, which they bought themselves) so I'll be watching this thread with interest![0 -
We have a 21st in October. Not sure i was going to do anything special.... I got some 'special' things for my 40th.... Still in the cupboard gathering dust and never used....NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

I took my daughter on holiday so she would always have the memoriesThe object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane — Marcus Aurelius0

My daughter is in New Zealand so I put together a package including:
5 Pandora charms for her bracelet
digital photo frame with family pics over the years (I scanned in sets of old photos)
clothes, books, toiletries
Her dad sent her a snowboard and bindings.
The photo frame was very popular and it will be easy to add to the pics by sending memory cards in the future.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -

I was given jewellery by my parents on my 21st.
From one parent a gorgeous platinum and diamond octopus pendant, from the other a pair of platinum and diamond drop earrings. As much as I love them though I'm terrified to wear the earrings in case I lose them, although the necklace gets a comparatively large amount of wear (given I tend to wear the same silver pendant all the time my birthday one is the usual one I wear for special occasions). It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

For my 21st I got a gorgeous leather bag, it's beautiful and a classic design that'll age well. Mum had wanted to get me jewellery, but as my 21st was 2 weeks before our wedding I already had a special (engagement) ring, and was getting another in 2 weeks time, also DH bought me jewellery to wear on the day.
Best pressie ever was for my 18th - mum wrapped up 18 different gifts (just bits like chocolate, a CD, socks) with the 18th one I opened being my "main" present.0 -
My parents put money towards a holiday for me - a friend and I went to New York for our 21sts, it was a great holiday and for me personally, much better than jewellery although obviously it depends on the individual!0

for my 21st my parents paid for my flights to go and visit my sister on her ERASMUS year in Texas- i prefered this to a piece of jewelery as I would be concerned about losing/damaging it so would not wear it much (and since my sister lost her 21st birhday necklace within 6 months maybe its not all in my head!).when the first cup of coffee tastes like washing up she knows she's losing it0

I guess it depends really. If your DS is going on holiday or something around his birthday, maybe spending money? I always prefer a practical gift!
For my 21st my mum bought me a new king size bed, I was pregnant and the one I had was one of these low beds, I just couldnt get in and out of it anymore, so she bought me a divan type bed.
I usually get my mum to put money towards my car insurance or MOT!! But like I said, I prefer practical. Watches and things are nice, but how many times do they really get worn, especially if they are really expensive!
What about putting money towards something he needs or wants? Or one of those Red Letter Days maybe?0
