Pukkamum I think you are getting a very hard time here from some very holier-than-though posters who obviously never have to deal with unpleasant people in their lives.
Unfortunately in the real world, unclean, rude folk (relatives or not, fat, average or thin) have to be dealt with.
By the way, do we really have to have every single post of the OPs, analysed, dissected and commented on to the nth degree?
She asked for advice on a very REAL problem. If you don't want to help don't post.
I'm glad it turned out OK for you OP. Best of luck.0 -
I will reiterate i never once said all obese people were smelly and yes some of my comments were spiteful but not towards ALL obese people merely to my in-laws.
I know they haven't lost weight as i see pics of them on social networking sites.
Are you saying also that because i don't like them then i should cut them out of my children's lives?
Have you cut everybody that you have a problem with out of your life is there not one person in your life you tolerate for the sake of others?
I have to say to the non-judgemental people judging me on being judgmental 'let he who is without sin cast the first stone'
Pukkamum, I wouldnt even bother trying to explain yourself, you asked what I thought was a reasonable question, somewhere along the line smelly and obese were mentioned, and now your on trial
You have every right to be concerned about 70 odd stone sitting on your sofas, and am sure everyone else would be gulping at the thought if they were receiving visitors who were overweight sitting on thier brand new sofas.
It just amazes how the tide turns sometimes on these boards, we are here to offer help and advice, not have a go at the poster.0 -
You mean make a fuss? You mean draw attention to my obese fellow travellers? That's the trouble - I'd rather put up with the situation.
No, my problem was solved by my own action: blocking off the seat that I'd paid for by moving the armrest and preventing the young woman from sitting on me.
It didn't solve their problem - and that was something that they ought to have have thought about when they booked their flight.
You could have been discreet and not made a fuss. I'm overweight but fit easily into the seats and I would have been upset if I overflowed onto another person.0 -
Thank you both i was beginning to think everyone had me down as on a par with Adolf Hitler!!!!!!
I can't help but think that if the word obese had never been used there would never have been such a furor and people would have sympathised purely for the fact i had smelly unwashed unkempt ill-mannered relatives coming round.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

Of course there are people that I tolerate. When it comes to my daughter though I have to put her welfare as priority and if I feel that it would be better that she not associate with a particular family member (for a genuine reason and not something silly), then she wont! If that makes me a bad mother, then so be it.To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0 -

I wouldn't bet on it.
Some people can't help being smelly and ill-mannered. Or so it seems.0 -
Have I missed something? I know the relatives didn't come in the end - but the OP was worried about 70 stone of relatives sitting on a sofa. Didn't she get 2 new sofas - a 3 seater and a 2 seater? Couldn't she have directed one of them to sit on the 2 seater - and the other 2 on the 3 seater - and then she and her husband could've either sat on some cushions on the floor, or taken some dining chairs into the livingroom (as this is what I do if I have too many people and not enough sofas).0

I say this as a fatty who ate too much, too much of the wrong things and didn't move enough. I'm slowly changing this but don't consider myself to have a disease.
To those that think obesity is a disease - if I lose a few stones and get to a normal weight, is my disease cured? If I put on weight again have I contracted the disease again?
You are right though, it's a pointless debate here and not what the OP was posting about.
She has a real problem that I wouldn't like and shouldn't be having to replace sofas after people visit.
Is it not the other way around? Asthma and type 1 Diabetes are chronic conditions as the sufferer had absolutely no control over contractinng it: whereas with HIV they did, they had a choice, and it is therefore a disease (in the UK in general)?
There really is a ridiculous difference between a human body's inabilty to produce insulin anymore and the same body being able to successfully burn 5,000 calories a day without any exercise! :eek:ACHIEVING THE AIM SINCE.........0 -

I find that quite offensive comment. Ok some people have got infected though dangerous life styles that put them selfs at risk think but they didnt choose to get HIV
But what about the people who have been infected though infection blood infusions, children who born with HIV, what people who innocently have sex with there partner thinking that there safe get infected. All them didn't choose to get HIV nor living lifestyles where they were choosing to put themselves at risk.0
