Well today my new very expensive sofas arrived, brill they look fab comfy etc.
I have threatened the kids with death if i see them jumping even near them etc etc.
Now for the problem.
DH's family are coming over on sunday and they are all on the cough cough large side.
And when i say large i mean large.
The two sisters are around 25 and 28 stones respectively and his brother is 20 stones.
My last sofa broke when DH's sister bounced down on it, one of the reasons for the new sofas but i didn't say anything as it was quite old.
But what do i do?
I am really worried about them sitting on them.
DH laughed and said we should make the kids sit on the two and we'll sit on the three and refuse to move.
I know he is joking but i am really getting upset about it.

Use a variation of the old bad back bed trick - stick a sheet of plywood under the seat cushions to spread the load a bit. Alternatively suggest that it would be a nice idea to spend the day outside in the garden. (non serious suggestion - if you start quickly you might have time to build them an outdoor sofa from bricks and concrete!)Adventure before Dementia!0

Can you not suggest you all go out for a pub lunch ?
That way they would be sitting on someone else's seats ?
Failing that could you put some board under for extra support ?
Seriously what do they do at home ?
That would annoy me too!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

You knew what your relatives - your in-laws - were like before you ordered the sofas.
Sometimes people are more valuable than expensive but presumably poorly built possessions.
The suggestion of a pub lunch is a good one, or else move the sofas out to make more room for lots of other chairs.0 -
I did suggest to DH that we bring in the old sofas and hide the new ones in the garden, they live down south and they only come up every so often.
He thinks i am joking.
I do like the plywood trick do you think that would help?
At home they have some very old sofas that are almost touching the floor with the extra weight.
I know it sounds awful but DH doesn't like to go out with them as he finds their weight very embarassing, i know thats awful but true.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

They aren't very interested in us to be honest and are only coming up because they want to go to the trafford centre.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -

What a strange comment! Unsurprisingly other peoples obesity isn't the first thing on my mind when I want to buy things for my home!
OP: Think you will have to move the sofas or meet away from the home.0 -
Sorry but this made me chuckle
:rotfl:
I'd third, fourth, fifth the wood under the cushions method. Or you could just say that if they break it they buy new ones for youWhat's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..0 -

I suggested DH pretends he's hurt his back then he has to lie across one the whole time, he suggests we 'hire' some neighbourhood kids to sit on sofas so there is no room!!!!!I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
Actually I would go for putting the old sofa's back if you still have them...which it sounds like you have.....save any damage to the new ones!
As for people saying they are your relatives that does not mean they have the right to destroy your things- and it sounds like the combined weight might!
Hope you get something sorted. xErmutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
