as an interesting twist, if you DO spend the day in the garden (lovely weather etc), I would advise going out and buying some of the cheapest, flimsiest chairs you can find. Make sure they're made of wood, but of poor quality.

Set these lovely chairs out for your visiting in-laws, and wait for the beautiful sound of wood breaking under stress. See how many of the chairs they break - if they smash them all, act outraged that they've broken all your lovely chairs. Or take secret bets beforehand on who will "crack" first / how many will break in total? :)

Just a thought, can you cover them and plastic and tell them you've had a stain resistant coating applied due to the kids and it needs time to dry before you can sit on them?? LOL

You could spend time in the garden if it is nice, but you may find the heat becomes too much for them and they head indoors to the cool and your new sofas. Ditto pub lunch as they could head back to yours for a cup of tea.

I would put the old sofas back for now and then put the nice ones in place after they go.

The next time they come, have a piece (or two) of three quarter inch thick plywood at the ready to slide under the seat cushions.

Make a joke of it - "now be careful how you sit on the sofas - we've only just bought them and they cost a lot - we're charging a fiver a seat - and no bouncing on 'em!"

Either that - or meet them at the Trafford Centre - so that they don't have to waste any shopping time!

You knew what your relatives - your in-laws - were like before you ordered the sofas. Sometimes people are more valuable than expensive but presumably poorly built possessions

Strangely enough Pee, we don't all buy our furniture according to the desires and needs of the odd visitor.

And it's a very large supposition to assume that something is poorly built. A combined weight of 70 stone on even the most well built seats is enough to do damage. It's certainly enough to damage the springs directly underneath sofa seats.

We have a very large member of our family and they literally just let their legs buckle when they 'sit' down and slam themselves into a seat. They don't have the ability to sit down in a controlled way anymore.

"Sorry we can't go in the lounge as we've just had some woodworm treatment done - didn't realise it would mean we had to stay out of the room for 48 hours"

As for them not sitting in the garden because its hot - tough! Its going to be warm indoors and I'd personally rather their "problem" was manifest outside with plenty of ventilation!

I am def gong to suggest to DH the plywood as unfortunatley the old sofas are being picked up today by the council.

You know with the plywood, wouldnt they be able to feel it as they sit down??
