Speeding fine

  • Speed awareness courses are only offered in certain areas. As far as I am aware, motorways do not qualify.

If it helps, the police cars posted on motorway bridges always face the oncoming traffic. The good news on this is that if you're going the opposite way, you're in the clear. The bad news is that if you're travelling face on, not only can they get you, but they also take a photo.

From my own experience (and that of others I know), if you are going to get nicked, it usually happens sooner rather than later. But if you have never come across any of this before, and therefore have no points on your license (obviously), the big thing that may help reassure you is that almost all insurance companies ignore one speeding offence - they are such a fact of life these days that one will not normally affect your renewal premium. Hope that helps!
  • They don't get too bothered with more points, they usually want to know the details.I think my premium went up about £60 when I had 6 points (I received 3 for 92 on mway and got home to find NIP for 48 in a deserted roadworks 7am on a Sunday morning (I'd been doing 40 for about 3 miles before frustration got the better of me)).

If the photos are of the rear of the car only then say you did not know who was driving at the time. The people who issue the speeding fines should eventually drop the case as they don't have any evidence to prosecute anyone with.

Also I have heard that sending the NIP (Notice of Intended Proscutions, the thing which they will send you in the post) back without having signed will close the case without any fines been issued.

it sadly dont work like that anymore they just prosecute the driver instead (change in law)

If you have been caught by a van dont bother appealing I have gone to one of those open days and been photgraphed in my own car on a test track. I was told to try and cover up as reasonably as possible as i would in the 10 seconds i would see a van on a motorway ie dark glasses and visor down. The photographs are so clear they could see a rather distinctif scar on my cheek and on my knuckle. They could prove it was me easily driving. The camera is also calibrated before every shift down to about 0.000003mph.
pay the fine take the points and slow down

I don't nessecarily agree with some of the speed limits set but I still have to obry them!!

I have once got away with a speeding fine before. The letter came in the post one day after selling car and one day before moving house I didn't mean to forget to reply I just put it to back of my mind. ( 7 years later still know come back after several producers ( mainly for faulty rear light or just bored cops))

I sympathise with you there tom and know how annoying it is to do 40 when there's nothing around, no workers etc. - I always stick to 40 when going through roadworks because I'm aware of cameras hidden away but also road workers' safety, and whenever I do I have a massive trail of (angry) drivers behind me. But it's worth it because I probably get to my destination a few mins later which is of no consequence to me but no fine :T

What really p1sses me though is people who go through at 70/80 then slow down when they see anything resembling a camera or a patrol car. I say more unmarked cars are needed in this circumstance

I was caught, by camera, in Northern Ireland. Fair cop - I thought I was on dual carriageway, but they later explained that it was a 'crawler' lane. Fixed Penalty arrived at home, in England, - sent off form and received notification that because I had UK driving licence (as opposed to N.I. licence) matter had to be dealt with in magistrates court. Six months wait before I got court summons - Given £60 fine and 3 points - same as fixed penalty system. However, it took me over 3 months, and many phone calls, to get my licence back - this was effectively the same as a 3 month ban since I travel a lot and use Hire Cars. When licence was finally returned they had issued a separate counterfoil, with the 3 points. Have since found out that these points are only applicable in Northern Ireland - no need to declare in UK and am told it does not affect any mainland points total. Is it just me????

  • You can also get off a speeding fine on a technicality- if the case goes to court the poice are legally obliged to let you have sight of their evidence 14 days before the hearing. Failure to do so will make any evidence presented on the day inadmissable. Apparently the police fail to send evidence 9 times out of 10, but most people don't know any different and accept the evidence.

This applies to all court cases.
  • You are lucky you only have speeding fines to worry about. In USA they have implemented (under trial) sound cameras. These things take a photo & recording of you if your music is too loud. It the posts you a recording and fine!

Im dreading the day they come to the UK. Ill be poor.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!
  • those mobile camera take two photos then take yr average speed between the two. You get away with it if you braked enough in time between the two shots. Pretty dangerous in itself IMHO.

I got caught by one of these coming between Glasgow and Carlisle about two years ago. Apparently this is a popular spot for them.

    I was doing 96 MPH and i got 3 points and a 60 quidder.
