If you are going to receive anything you should receive a form through the post within 14 days (i think its 14 anyway). You will have to tell them who was driving the car. The standard penalty is £60 and three points on your licence. Fingers crossed you haven't actually been done tho!!!"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

Hi,:)
I've just noticed this post, and thought you could help. I don't drive, but hubby does, and he's been told that you can see when you're caught by a speed camera, because such cameras always make a flash when they take pictures. Is this true? Is the flash a reliable indicator (the only one?) of your being caught? How can you know for sure?

MBN - like i said, i THINK i was caught speeding, there was no flash as it was a police van overlooking the motorway. As such I would be inclined to think that it would be impossible to continuosly (sp!) flash for all speeding drivers on a motorway. Also, I think some speed camers are not just photos but more a film of the speed with a still photo taken from the film. I hope this makes sense.0

As far as I know, a flash is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition of being caught. If it flashes, it has noticed you speeding, but not all cameras have film in...If I had a pound for every time I didn't play the lottery...0

If it's a mobile camera it doesn't need a flash. It depends how fast you were going. If you were over 26 miles above the limit then you could be looking at a court summons, below then your just looking at 3 points and 60 quid. Eitherway you'll have a letter within 2 weeks. If it's 3 points you'll be informed quite quickly if not, it can go up to 6 months.
FYI, I was caught 27 miles above the limit and was fined £200 with £35 costs and 5 penalty points. Although they wrote to the owner of the car within 2 weeks I wasn't processed until 6 months later!0 -

Many thanks for your replies,:T and apologies for my stupid questions (you can see that I don't drive
).
OK, so you can never know for sure when you're being caught - until you get the formal letter by post, that is. I also didn't know about the 3 point penalty for speed driving (I thought the only penalty was the £60 fine). Definitely worth knowing!'Into every abyss I still bear the blessing of my affirmation' (Friedrich Nietzsche)0 -
Yep, 12 points and your banned!0
