Speeding fine

  • After 32 years of driving, I have been informed I was speeding (38mph in a 30mph zone) along the dual carriageway that runs outside our home.

    Knowing the area well I was surprised to receive a notification, so asked for photo evidence. I have received two photos with readout info at the top. The first photo taken at a time of 12.09 and 59 seconds shows my car travelling at 33mph. Theere is also a figure of 69.2m, which I assume is the distance to the radar gun (?).

    The second photo shows my car again at 12.10 and 0 seconds now travelling at a speed of 38mph and a distance of 139.9m.

    So in the space of ONE second I have increased my speed by 5 miles an hour, and it appears travelled 70.7 metres?

    I do not drive a supercar, rather an 11 year old Saab. Add to this I can estimate the distance travelled by the parked cars and fixed post box also shown in the photos as being only a few metres, I really do not understand the evidence supplied.

    I have been informed I can attend a Safe Driving course for three hours and pay the £60, but this would be admitting the evidence supplied is correct.

    Advice is duly sought please.

    Many thanks

    David

    PS I also used Martin Lewis' advice on council tax which proved highly effective, so many thanks for that.

    I'd advise you to use the website pepipoo for free advice.
    The way that laser speed measurement devices work means that erroroneous readings can quite easily be generated, but "they" don't want to know that. As you say, the chance that you accelerated 5mph in 1s is near impossible. However, either reading could be incorrect.

    Many thanks I have duly registered.

    Someone has worked out that to travel 70.7metres in 1 second I would have to be travelling at 158mph! Assuming of course that I am reading the figure correctly. As you can see from the picture, in the first shot you can just pick out the top of the post box (the only truly fixed object) between the lamp post and the car, which is clearly shown in the second photo.

    If you swap the pics around such that the later pic is at the bottom things look stranger.

    @12:09:59 distance shows as 139.9
    @12:10 distance shows as 69.2

    Thus it would seem your getting closer to the speed gun not further away even though it's the rear of the car thas photoed.

    P.S. You need to correct your post at pepipoo as it's seems you made the same mistake in that post.

    I know, but that is the correct order they were taken.

    'Log 29' followed by 'Log 30' which, I can assume, means I was also driving in reverse as well as travelling at 158mph!

    Look at the bottom pic you can just see the roof of the red Clio that is seen in the top pic.

    70m Not likely.

    If the limit is 30mph, and 1 pic shows you doing 33mph and and another 38mph, then correct me if I'm wrong but you are exceeding the speed limit.

    If I was 'speeding' at 33 then I would be within the 'allowance'? If I was driving at 38, then so be it. It is just I live no more than 200 metres from where this picture was taken, on the same road, so know the limit well. The photos, rather than confirm my speed only seem to confuse. If you read the figures correctly I travelled 70.7 metres in reverse at an estiamted speed of 158mph.

    I am not trying to 'squirm' out fo this. This cannot be further from the truth. Having four children of my own and a grandchild, road safety is very important - having no speeding or driving offences in 32 years must go some way to show I am not your boy racer type.

    Take it on the chin and pay the fine.
