Please dont go dumpster diving! dumpsters are not cleaned out regularly and although there may be perfectly good food chucked in it - you cannot be certain that it hasnt been contaminated by the dumpster or by rats. you would be risking your life! and I cannot believe that people are telling you to do this!!! are they mad??? would they???

Obviously - it would only be food that is still in its wrapper - not something that was "lying loose" in there. That DOES have to be emphasised.

The food one sees people "rescuing" from dumpsters in all those YouTube clips about it is still in its wrappers.

Answer to "Would I do it?". Yes actually - if I were in a position where the choice was between doing that on the one hand or going hungry/cold/minus some medical care I needed on the other hand.

We all have our lists of what we WON'T do to get food if desperate - my personal one is I wouldn't eat "industrial" meat or battery eggs (unless done inadvertently because some had been smuggled into a ready meal I was forced to eat because that was all there was) no matter how desperate - but I would dumpster dive. I would see it as a bigger "health and safety" issue to eat fish actually - considering how polluted the sea is these days (grr!) and would have to force myself to eat fish if I were desperate and hope that that particular fish had been swimming round in a relatively "cleanER" bit of the sea - so I certainly wouldnt worry myself about (wrapped) food in a dumpster.

    Hi There

Can you take in ironing - a card in the local shop might help, or babysit for money.

Are there relatives or friends who can help to feed you until you get your benefits sorted out?

Churches can be good places to look for free meals, and in many cities, there are food runs for homeless, or low income families. I used to live in Bristol, and i know there is a cafe called the wild goose where you get a hot meal for free.

Otherwise, someone has mentioned freeganism - google it.

Sounds obvious - but check down the back of the sofa, through all the pockets, in bags anywhere for loose change.

CAB - may be able to give other ideas re food even if the crisis loan is not an option.

Thinking of you - been there myself before.

    Hang in there

ceridwen - I have nothing but respect for you - but I wouldnt dumpster dive even for wrapped food.
as wrapped food could have been bitten through and you wouldnt necessarily know it.
have you ever been to cornwall and seen how clear and clean the sea is? I have and wouldnt object to eating fish caught off its waters I have seen dumpsters and smelt them and sorry but there is no comparison!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldnt raid next door neighboors bin and dont see the difference between that and dumpsters.

Try foraging in your local area, you'd probably be surprised at what you could find! There will be lots of guides online as to what is safe and what isn't, or you could go to the library and look at the books on mushroom hunting and natural foraging etc. This should tide you over for a little while, like others have suggested I would ask family to either do an online order for you and send it to your house, or wire some money directly into your bank account. Although you may be embarassed, asking neighbours for help is probably a good idea too, I'm sure no-one would begrudge you a few tins or packets from the cupboard, if you lived next door to me I'd want to do everything I could to help you. Freegle/freecycle would also be good places to ask for any spare tins people have knocking around. Good luck and hope you get sorted :)
D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't important

If you are genuinely going to starve to death why dont you just get a Paydayloan??:huh:

They dont even bother credit checking you for some, so dont care how bad your credit rating is.

SO its an easy simple way of getting a few hundred quid cash to cover you for the next 2weeks.

You can then either repay it or just get it written off with a Debt Relief Order.

haven't read all thread but if your have children then Social Services has a 'duty of care' and i would suggest that you contact your local office , explain situation & ask for a Sec 17 child in need payment.

    any probs PM me.
