I have no money! How can we eat??

Options
Hi all,

I feel so stupid posting this :/ but i have no choice.

After losing my job, and failing to get paid last month ( i am taking this to the employment tribunal ), myself and my OH have been really struggling. At the moment we have literally no money. Not a penny.
He is currently walking to and from work every day and i am still job hunting.
My benefits are currently not due for another 2 weeks as my last ones needed to be used to try and make up our rent, although we are still 100 quid short on that and its due monday.
We have nothing at all at the moment, and nothing to sell in order to make money :(
In the fridge/freezer we have 1 chicken kiev and 2 chicken escalopes. In the cupboards we have a tiny bit of pasta, maybe one serving and some sweetcorn.

Im at a loss, dont know what to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi

So sorry to hear about your problems, good luck with the tribunal.

Do you rent through a private landlord or through the council? Can you explain to them that you are short on rent this month, and why?

I would be tempted to skim another £10 off your rent money (if you're £100 short, another £10 isn't going to make too much difference) to ensure you can feed yourselves (not sure that's the best advice legally but it's what I'd do!). There are many threads here on eating on a budget, try this one:

    Meal for 2 for 50p

I would stock up on a massive bag of value pasta, some value plum tomatoes (tinned), some cheap milk and cheese for protein/calcium - but the thread above will give you some great advice about what to buy. Weezl has a thread as well that I can't find at the moment but has recipes for healthy eating on a budget.

I would also suggest getting in touch with one of the debt charities so that this situation can be avoided in future - there are links at the top of the Debt Free Wannabe board.

Good luck and let us know how you get on xx

I am so sorry to hear your struggling at the moment as already suggested try the dss. Do you have any nearby friends or neighbours or family that will help you out in the short term food wise. You may feel embarressed to ask but it's worth a try until you money comes in.

Do you have a CAB locally - we can get food parcels for people in your situation.

    Good luck.

I dont have any family nearby nor do i have any close friends.

My local CAB is too far away to walk to, and i have no money for a bus fare, and to top it off, i have no phoneline as we couldnt afford the bill.

With regards to rent, we have already paid as much as we could, but less 100 pounds so cant take anything back from that. We rent of a private landlord

I've just read this again - what benefit is it that is used to directly pay a private landlord (other than housing benefit, but I'm thinking you mean Job Seeker's here)? It's not something I've ever heard of, so maybe a trip to the Jobcentre to ask about this will be needed.
