Couch to 5k Running - Part Three

Hi All,
I am very unfit. 5 stone to loose according to doctor! I stumbled accross the Cto5K by accident. I have been given a rather decent treadmil (family meamber no longer needed it). Researching tips for using it, i found the Cto5K- and then this thread- knew searching forum I'd find some lovely people already doing this!
Well, I dug out some shorts, support bra AND lycra top to restrict the black eyes, and tried W1R1. I managed 19mins 30 sec before I had to stop. Feel bad for stopping, but couldnt keep going... maybe I was going too fast? What speed should you be doing? I set tread mill on 4.8 for walk and 7 for jog. Or maybe it is due to being sooooooo unfit!!!
I need to do this. Diagnosed with early stages of type 2 diabetes in Jan, and if I loose weight, it will keep it at bay for longer... I'm only 29... Dad developed it at 30.
I suppose I should give myself some credit.. 19 mins of the podcast is better than sitting on my bum! Please tell me it gets easier?!
Kudos to all those who have stuck at it and are advancing through the weeks

Hi Claire, if you have never run before I would definately say you are going too fast for just starting out. I am on my sixth week of the C25k program tomorrow and I'm not even running at 7 on the treadmill for a jog yet! lol You are on the program to help change your life, it isn't a race and you don't want to burn out or get discouraged and end up quitting either by going too fast. Sorry I hope I don't sound like you're doing wrong, but it's best to really ease into it. Right now I'm only jogging at 5, but I also have short legs! lol You can find many c25k forums with a lot more support and help keep you more motivated. And yes DO give yourself some credit for getting on the treadmill!:D I check in ever so often if you ever want to talk or encourage each other! Best of luck and don't give up because you can do it!0

Wow, lots of you sticking at it, well done! Suzie, I would give week 5 a try, and if it's too hard, then drop back, but go with what you feel is right for you.
Little Evo, I was thinking about you, I'm glad you're still going
I agree with alliwantistosave, make sure you stretch after your runs, it takes away so much of the soreness in the following days. I always feel crippled the next day if I forget to stretch after running.
Claireabell, well done for getting started! Yes, I would say if you are struggling to finish, then you are going too fast. I can't comment on the treadmill speeds because I only run outdoors, but you should be running slowly enough that you can speak but not sing. And yes, that might mean actually running slower than you walk for a while! I definitely did when I first started. You build the speed up laterDon't forget that 5k is classed as endurance running, it's not meant to be fast. And yes, I can safely say it gets easier, and very quickly. Just don't over-do it in the early stages, and you'll be doing 5k in no time, with enough breath to enjoy the scenery (yes, really!)
Yay, Wirenth, congratulations!! Onwards and upwards now0 -
Don't worry! When the adrenaline of the day sets in I normally find it's fine. Sometimes your body is more tired than usual, it doesn't mean you're not fit enough to do it! I couldn't do my event which was yesterday (5k) as I was ill with food poisoning. But I hope to do one again soon, going to aim for a 10k! I find that wearing some jeans that don't fit that well prior to running is good motivation for me to keep going!0

I WILL do this! :jThis thread is always here if you need it or want to let us know how you are getting on.
This morning I did Week 6 Run 1 and it just amazes me how far I've come from no running to looking forward to it. I notice more runners on the street these days like when driving and I find myself wondering how far they have run or if they are doing the c25k as well. :rotfl:lol0 -
Run day today, Claireabell? How did it go running slower?0

Thanks little Evo and AIWTIS. I am running outside, and try to stretch after my runs.
I left it a few days, before I went onto Week 5, but have managed the first run so far. I was due to run today, but life got in the way - late back from work, miserable weather, badly timed dinner!
I will try to run tomorrow, but leaving longer between runs seems to help with the shin pain. Maybe my body is getting used to the exercise!Need to lose 23lb, but need help!:( DFW Weightwatcher: 5lb/26lbDecluttered in Feb - 49/100, Mar - 82/100

Way to go Suziebea!
And like you I always stretch after runs as now I notice a difference in my right knee tightening up if I don't do any stretches after running and that happening one time was plenty enough for me.
I am also due to run tomorrow Week 6 Run 2. I really wish I could shut my brain off from talking to me as it tries to tell me to slow down and even tells me go ahead and walk for a minute or two when there is absolutely nothing wrong with the rest of my body and so I keep running! lol I talk a lot to myself to motivate my feet to keep running. If I did this outside people would think I was crazy so good thing right now I'm still on the treadmill! lol:rotfl:
Lets us know how you get on tomorrow!:)0
