March Grocery Challenge - £69.54 / £3000 -
Hi everyone
Total running newbie here but read about the c25k challenge and thought this might be what I need to improve my fitness. But I have never run in my life....... Over the past year I have increased my fitness while loosing weight but feel I need to do more.
I have downloaded the first 2 weeks pod cast's but I need to get some trainers as mine are a little old and not supportive. But I am a little apprehensive and worried that I might end up doing myself some damage.
Any advice and support would be appreciated xRestarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed

First of all it's do-able, I've done it and I had never run in my life before. And I'm 40 and not slimso I don't have any natural advantages. I did the full couch to 5k about a year ago, then of course stopped running and only getting back to it now.
The first thing you really need to do is get fitted properly for running shoes. No short cuts, no cheap buys. Go to a proper running shop and get them to put you on a treadmill and recommend shoes for you. Expect to pay £60-£80. this is the ONLY outlay cost for running and the shoes will probably do you the best part of a year unless you take up marathon running, so you need to do this right. If you feel a bit worried I'd recommend popping in on a weekday morning when it's quiet and you're more likely to get the owner than a part timer. But as an overweight 40 yo I've never been treated with anything less than courtesy so don't feel intimidated. As far as I am aware this is the biggest factor in avoiding injury. Although I'd also avoid hilly routes for quite a while too!
The other big thing I learned is if it's tough, slow down. I run at just above a fast walk speed (7.2k an hour on the treadmill, that's less than 5mph) and can keep going for a reasonable amount of time at that pace. But if I speed it up my breathing can't keep up. So if your breathing is terrible, slow down. When I say 'if your breathing is terrible' I mean 'when your breathing is terrible'the first few times I thought I was going to die. Read over first timers experiences here, that's how everyone feels so don't be disheartened.
Oh and as a report back for everyone else, did another 2 x 10 mins this morning. I'm building up to the full 20 non stop again :eek:0
