Couch to 5k Running - Part Three

  • I did Race for Life yesterday and was very pleased with my time of 32 minutes. I ran for all but four minutes of it- I did 18 minutes (3km), walked for 4 minutes then ran the last 10 minutes. I feel rather pleased with myself as I've only been back to running for the last three weeks or so.

Definitely going to carry on with the podcasts as I really enjoy them, the RFL has given me a bit more confidence in what I can do if I push myself.

Hello everyone - haven't been back for a week. I had an annoying difficult client at work last week for training, after day of that I was so exhausted, I couldn't do anything! And even though I don't like wine, and half a glass is usually too much for me, I had half a bottle two days...

Anyway back to running. I did 25 min run last Monday, and was unable to do more than 10 min on Wednesday, I was that tired. So I took the rest of the week off from running and rested.

Went back to gym last night and set myself a target of running for 25 min, and if I can add 3 more. And I did it - I ran for 28 min! I still find it hard to believe that I can do it. I am following a diet at the moment (for other reasons, I need to be below target BMI for IVF referral), and since beginning of May I lost 5kg, 4cm of waist, 6cm of hips and 7cm of my thighs! I am happy and I am going to do a bit of shopping on Thursday to get some clothes that are not falling of me now!

    Ginvzt - Well done!

Week 6 Run 3 done:j I can't believe I managed to run for 25 min when I couldn't manage 2 x 10 min runs a few days ago! It just goes to show that your body does let you know when you are perhaps overdoing things. I am going to treat myself to a big slice of DD's chocolate birthday cake to celebrate!

Bit scared that I have no more interval runs now:eek:

Good luck everyone out today - if I can do it so can you!

Thanks! It is a bit of a 'shock to the system' when you can't rely on having a short break from running midway, but as you saw - you can do it. I have to say, that I was thinking to stop in my long (for me) run, but just kept telling myself - you have done one third already, you are half way through, only 10 min left, you are 2/3 through, only 5 min left, you can do it... And when I was told 25 min is over and I can take 5 min to cool down, I pushed myself further and did another 3.

And what is more - I went onto 'skiing machine' (that is how I call it, don't know proper name, but it is not cross-trainer), and did 10 min more on that. I probably won't be able to do much on Wednesday, but at least I am trying. I want to do 30 min run before I go on holiday in just over 2 weeks time, so fingers crossed my body will cooperate!

Well done to you got-it-spend-it and well done ginsvt and cookiemum.:j

My run today was hard. I don't like having to run in the middle of the day but I don't have time before work. I calibrated my footpod yesterday so that I can accurately measure the distance. My warm up and cool down were both 0.5K . I ran 5.2K in four ten minute intervals with one minute imbetween. The wind was really strong and was either across me or into my face so I felt like I was in some really rough weather even though in reality it was not too bad. It did make it tough though. ( I was a bit dissappointed with the distance:( )

I can always think of a thousand reasons not to run but I really need to get fit and hopefully loose some weight before our big summer holiday this year. Well done ginsvt on your weight loss. I have been running since February and have only just started to loose weight. 4 pounds in the last 2 or 3 weeks. It is really when I have started trying to get my trophy on my polar heart monitor that I'm losing anything. I think it is because on my "rest" days I have to go for an hours walk to hit my targets.

Finally at the end of the podrunner podcasts they have a little "tip" It was quite interesting what she said today. She repeated what I am sure we have all heard already that you should be able to talk comfortably when you are running. ha ha. This enables you to build up stamina and come back feeling good. She said if you run too fast you get loads more aches and pains and then become demotivated. (it made sense when she was saying it.) Finally she said if you could sing while you were running you need to go faster:D
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

I had a good nights sleep and managed to get out and run this morning so am happy with myself. I ran the same distance as the last 2 times and did it in 29 mins this time. It was a lovely morning - cold and clear.

Thanks teachergirl, that is really interesting to hear the running tip. I think sometime we are all guilty of pushing that bit to far, which is actually counter-intuitive.

I did Wk3Run1 today, even though I only did week 2 twice. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to my next run.

How about gasping "hello, yes I'm fine" to the nice old guy walking his dog while I was puffing and panting on my return leg, does that count?
