    Hi Chris
The signal issue is completely solved by the bumper.

This has not been my experience. As I mentioned before on this thread the iphone seems to have an inherently weak signal strength compared to a Nokia N95 on the same network (3; so in theory the one with the best 3G coverage). Everywhere I take it, it always has a few bars less than the other phone, never the other way around, despite being either in a case, or not being touched at all. I haven't made that many actual calls with it, but one time I did, the call got dropped a few minutes in, despite being in an area where the nokia shows full signal strength. I don't know why this was, but I had at that point accidently touched the phone on the sensitive area through the case (not the official apple bumper, but a 3rd party silicone case). On a separate note, I also accidently activated 'facetime' twice with my ear, which has got to be annoying after a while.
The reason I was so excited about the iphone 4 in the first place was that Mr Jobs said that the revolutionary antenna design would give a better signal, probably the single most important thing for me as I struggle to get data connections in moving trains. As it seems the opposite is true, my iphone 4 is going back...feel free to grab it reconditioned from 3 if you want.

I wondered if anyone can help? I know similar things have been asked before but I just want to make sure. I've just started using Iphone4 on Tesco Mobile and I want to make sure I know that when I'm at home I'm only using my own Wi-fi (so not using any data allowance, etc) I'm definteley connected to my Sky Wi-fi but the Mobile Network KB counter on my Iphone is going up all the time on it's own, is this just the phone counting the KB's while I'm connected to my home Wi-fi? In the top left on my phone it just says 02-UK with the bars showing I'm connected to Wi-Fi, take it that it would say something else if I was connected to something else? Also, does leaving 3G on affect anything to do with my use? I'm not particularly tecnically minded incase you haven't noticed!
    Thanks in advance

Just to completely contradict someone who replied to this earlier, the Mobile Network Usage counter on the iphone 4 Settings: General: Usage menu, does ONLY count data used over the mobile network (i.e. 3G, EDGE, HSDPA, GPRS), NOT Wi-fi usage. It shouldn't be going up if you are connected via wi-fi as all data should be routed through this. If you are worried about your data allowance, you can turn off 'Mobile Data' by going to Settings: General: Network. Most apps also allow you to separately disable mobile data.
Note that 3G is not just for data, you get your calls through it as well. The reason it used to eat battery life on earlier iphones was because O2 had a very poor 3G network so the phone was constantly searching for a 3G connection it couldn't find. Both battery life and 3G networks are much improved, so I wouldn't worry about it, just turn off the Mobile Data until you need it. For anyone on 3 mobile, there is no option to turn off 3G at all (don't know what it's like for other networks) as it's an entirely 3G network, although it has an agreement with Orange to piggyback on it's 2G transmitters where it doesn't get reception; I presume 3 are charged for this so don't want anyone using Orange networks by default!
  • Thanks for that, I've since turned Mobile Data off but does that not just stop the data counter as that hasn't gone up since? Looking at my statement it seems like I was on my own Wi-Fi cos theres only a couple of mins where it says GPRS and this must be when I used it for a couple of mins when I was out, other than that I've just used it at home. I've also turned mobile data and roaming off until I need them, cheers for the info.
  • Actually just checked my bill again and it says GPRS loads of times, would it only say this when I'm NOT on my own wi-fi? I presume your own wi-fi use wouldn't even register on your statement? I've turned mobile data off now and the wi-fi bars are still there as before so I'm sure that is what I've been using all along. It's not a problem as I've hardly used any but might have to phone Tesco if they are counting my wi-fi useage (someone else on the forum had this problem I think).

How comes OS4.0 messed up your phone ? what have apple said ?

OS4.0 has messed up thousands of iPhone 3G models, I am not aloan. The OS4.0 is just too powerful for the 3G model, but Apple (in their own little ways) decided not to tell it's customers that. As for Apple, they suggested I "upgrade". There are a handful of threads on this site about the 3G and OS4.0 software and what it has done to 3G handsets, aswell as the Apple forum.

I had no problems when I put OS 4.0 on my 3G. I have since got a iphone 4 which does obviously handle better because of fadter processor.

Just received a email off Apple that says my iP4 has been dispatched and will be with me tomorrow. That quick, so it must already be in the UK as overseas business post is not that quick, surely.

Well I'm suprised. My iP4 has arrived this morning. Just setting it up as I type this. Here's hoping all is well.
