Oscar_The_Grouch wrote: »Blah, blah, blah, blah - but how many people are ACTUALLY having a problem with the iPhone 4? You can't answer that and Montgomery Scott would have been proud of your "Physics is the same for everyone". If you follow that up with "Captain! The dilithium crystals are about to blow!!", I'll probably fall over laughing. What with the "Tricorder App", it's all going a bit silly.
And here we have a satisfied customer, who can (just as I can with my XDA) suffocate the signal but doesn't have the problem in everyday use.
Stuff physics and answer the question - Are real people ACTUALLY having problems with the iPhone? It's still 1-0 to the iPhone at the mo and even Jimbms who sold his phone hasn't mentioned any issues with the antenna.
I have to say it again:
If you don't want and iPhone 4, don't buy one. If you bought one and you don't like it, bring it back. (clicky)
here is a person who has both the iphone 3gs and the iphone 4 showing a video of making calls from the 3gs to the iphone4 showing dropped calls which affects only the iphone 4 and not the 3gs. if this video doesnt show that there is a problem then nothing will convince you. i hope the video helps a few others decide whether to stay with their 3gs or move to the iphone 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03PQyWp0mWE i cant be bothered looking for more, as this should suffice. see what happens with the bumper on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUMn7CEAtmw&feature=PlayList&p=5CE6CBD04F725A5A
good luck with what ever phone you buy. i dont see the point of making a rational discussion with you anymore on this issue.
even Jobs said at the conference that the iphone 4 drops 1 in hundred calls more than the 3gs. the 1 in 100 extra is meaningless without taking into context the actual numbers as the actual percentages it is worse off than the 3gs in reception would vary between infinity and zero. the solution may be the bumper. if you are happy with that work around then good for you. if you are happy without the bumper then good for you. there is nothing better than buying what you WANT and being happy with it!
i hope others use what ever phone that shows the raw signal strength including the iphone 3gs (via dialler codes) to see where they will use the phone has decent signal strengths if they want to buy after knowing whether the issue will affect them.
ps: jim is from isle of man and as he states the whole island gets good 3g signal so obviously he wont get dropped calls, but that isnt the situation on mainland uk. so using his example isnt representative of the problem being discussed. mind you he still got rid of the phone but that is an individual preference issue.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -

All gadgets involve a degree of compromise: for me the great battery life is a big positive (that's what they filled the inside with having moved the antenna to the outside).
I also like the freedom to fill my phone with quality apps if I want to (I could install about 28GBs of apps if I really wanted to - satnav maps say, or decent games, or the foreign language phrase book apps with lots of sound recordings of phrases).
I like the thin design - the steel and glass feels very solid compared to my older plastic phone.
The screen is great - important for web-browsing etc. Also it's legible outdoors in sunlight too - there was some rumour that Apple might have been going to use an OLED screen but I'm glad they didn't for that reason.
I like the improved sensitivity of the antenna - it gets and holds a signal in places where other internal antenna phones cannot (my old iPhone 3G, and a rubbish old Motorola).
Of course, I would have preferred it if it were cheaper. And I would have preferred it if the design didn't attenuate the signal if touched in certain places. However, see above - the external antenna actually gets a signal where some other phones do not. So, for me, the compromise (hold it slightly differently) is more than outweighed by the design, the thinness, the battery life, the games.
I have had no dropped calls however I hold the phone, and I don't live in a particularly strong signal area.
Hope that's helpful for anyone interested (although let's be honest, if we're really into Money Saving, we should all be happy with a £10 Alcatel)

Bubbles, I just want to know if anyone on this forum has a DAY TO DAY issue with the iPhone 4. Once again, I really am not bothered about the data behind the scenes, so going on about it is, frankly, pointless. I'm sure that if I was really that bothered, I could make a video showing what happens to the signal strength on my XDA when I hold it, but as any drop in signal does not affect my DAY TO DAY use of the phone, there's little point.
Lots of people are going on about this antenna issue, but how many people ACTUALLY have a DAY TO DAY issue with it; not a lab test issue, nor a "grip it this way and the signal drops" issue, but who genuinely has a problem with making calls/using the internet with the iPhone 4?
I did find someone myself:I've upgraded from a 3g to iphone 4 and want to get a refund. I only made 4 calls today but I dropped at least 2 of these which happens every day and is a problem I never had with the 3g. A few days ago I tried to make an urgent call but couldn't get a signal for half an hour in an area which is normally fine.
I don't want to be stuck with this for 2 years and would rather go back to my old 3g as at least it was reliable.
I hope I can get a refund and cancel my contract. I'll be calling CPW on Monday.
I feel very sorry for them and hope that they get their refund. The thing is that they are the only one that I have found. There are other posters on the same thread that said they had issues with their N97 and still more that say "If I had an iPhone 4, I'd be straight back down the shop to return it", meaning that they don't have an iPhone 4 and have been reading the Daily Mail again.
So, Bubbles, just to make it clear; it's not physics I'm concerned with, but the day to day use of a mobile phone by genuine people. I don't have an iPhone but I do want one. Being a sensible chap, I'm listening to feedback from other people who do actually own the phone. Based on the results here, I still intend to get one but I will be making sure I follow my own advice, which is:
1. If you don't want an iPhone 4, don't buy it
I do want an iPhone 4 and I'll buy it outright, sim free and contract fee after making sure in the store that there are no signal issues there.
2. If you bought one and you don't like it, bring it back
Says it all really. If it doesn't work for me, I'll return it.In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
Oscar I had seen that users post too and some more else where think on avforums. Plus the video is linked above, the video is made by someone who has a Mac related website.
Ps: about the apps2internal memory issues you refered to, even apple has an icon number limit above which you can't install apps. Oh I too have some 100 apps and have some free internal memory left. But would love more space which hopefully will be sorted soon.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -

The problem is that you could find no issue in the store as it has a strong signal and find issues elsewhere if you have a weak signal.0 -
HTC Desire vs iPhone 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S:
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/htc-desire-vs-iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-702739?artc_pg=9
Actually a fair review of them and points out the good points and bad points quite rationally. I find that summarises my albeit limited experience with them, there is not much between the iPhone 4 and the HTC Desire at all- some things are better, others worse and you can see Android still is young.
For me choosing these phones will come down to a few personal things.
Those are what people want - not only to do with the phone but personally. The iPhone is still a name to have as Apple pushes it high end (despite nowadays every man and the plumber seemingly owning one now!). Cost is a factor as the iPhone is premium priced. Availability as everyone seems to struggle with demand now. The other factor will be reliability as I know several folk who have got a Desire or gone with a 3GS rather than the iPhone 4 as they are concerned about these issues in the press or think that either there may be a solution soon so don't want to commit or a new version soon.
It is a difficult decision but with either of the 3 you won't go far wrong.0 -
I've only had my iPhone for a week, and have just contacted CPW about returning it - to which they said they wouldn't and I'd still be liable for a 2yr contract. My problem is that there has been a cracking noise from the back of the phone since day one (last Monday), and now I have the dreaded No Sim so cannot receive or make calls/texts.
Just sent this message through to CPW and am awaiting their response:
Dear Matthew,
I should add to my previous message that I will exercise my 'right to reject' this item under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 as it is not of satisfactory quality. Under these circumstances, Carphone Warehouse should refund the cost
of the iPhone in full and cancel any remainder of the mobile phone contract with Orange (for which I do not expect there to be a charge).
The Sales of Goods Act requires traders to sell items which are:
of satisfactory quality
fit for all purposes made known to the seller at the time of purchase being described
As the mobile phone clearly contravenes the Sales of Goods Act on these grounds, and falls under the guise of Mobile Misselling i.e. the mobile phone was not fit for purpose, as described or of satisfactory quality, I am within my right to return it.
Carphone Warehouse has a policy that any phone can be returned within 14 days for a full refund; furthermore, I legally have up to seven working days to return the item and cancel the contract with Orange - this is what I am asking you to carry out.
I await your response.
Will let you know what happens.

Yes; hence the "buy it outright" comment - Apple, according to their press con vid, are offering a 30 day return policy, so I'm sure I can find any issues in that time. Even if I just rely on the 14 day DSR, that's enough time.
You have to return the phone undamaged, but if they'll give me a bumper (which I can and will remove to test the phone) and I visit the Wonderful World of eBay for a screen/back protector, that's a small price to pay.In the beginning, the universe was created.
