Reverting back to Iphone 3.1.3?

I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS & I recently upgraded to OS 4.0. Since upgrading I have had lots of issues (my phone refuses to back up)
The phone isn't and has never been jailbroken. I'm using the iphone with Windows 7.
Is there anyway I can revert my phone software back to OS 3.1.3? I dont want to void my warranty by jailbraking the phone.

"Update: If you're on 3GS and having trouble with this method, reader Richard notes that for 3GS users: "Apple started signing their restore files requiring iTunes to "Phone home" and get permission to restore. Usually within 24 hours of a new firmware release, Apple stops signing the old versions preventing you from restoring back to an older version. The advice in your article about how to downgrade to 3.1.3 no longer works [for 3GS] because a few days ago Apple stopped signing that firmware."0

My 3gs was jailbroken as soon as I got it. Apple replaced it under warranty after a problem with the screen a coupe of months ago. I just restored to factory settings. Why would a jailbreak void the warranty?0 -
That thread is basically saying that it doesn't void your warranty as long as you do a DFU restore, as I previously said?????0

thanks for the fix marleyboy

As an aside, have you updated to the latest version of iTunes?
Backing up is broken on anything earlier than 9.2 on iOS4.
Also if you are finding you iPhone is misbehaving after an update to iOS4 it may be worth trying to do a clean restore to 4.0.1 and do "Setup Phone as New" rather than "Restore from Backup" as you have have something lurking in the backups thats causing the issue. You will however loose everything on your phone this way, so if you don't have them synced somewhere else such as gmail/yahoo/mobileme!!!
Cheers
