Mobile phone insurance is a ripoff. It's worse than Payment Protection Insurance. Not only is it expensive; it provides less protection than you probably have in place already.

I'll second that and the chances of them paying out are slim to none

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Sorry to shout, but I've already posted on here about insurance. Here's what you do (again):

Check your home contents insurance to see if you have "away from home" or "personal possessions" cover (same thing, different names). The cover is for anything you wear or carry in everyday life in and out of the home. Essentially, it covers the contents of your handbag/briefcase, your jewellery/watches, purse/wallett AND YOUR MOBILE PHONE. I always recommend you phone your insurers and speak to them about the iPhone, so they can confirm cover to you.

If you don't have the cover, ask them for a quote to add it. You probably want a limit of £3,000 to cover everything (you insure for the most you would be wearing and carrying, so think about what you take on holiday with you: clothes, the above items, cameras, etc.) and a "single item limit" of £1,000 (a set can be considered a "single item" so you need to insure the phone, case, cables, extras). When you ask for the quote, make sure they tell you:

    1. The annual price of the cover
    2. The price up to your next renewal date
    3. How much of 2 above is an administration fee (probably £25).

The admin fee is "one off" to cover the cost of changing the policy so if there's anything else you need to update, do it now.

If you want, you can ask for the normal cover and the specify your iPhone too. If you are worried about it, that's the best way to go and if you are doing it at the same time as adding the normal cover, the additional cost is a couple of quid at most.

"Personal Possessions" cover includes "unattended theft". This is where you are in a cafe, put your bag down and go over to the counter to buy your coffee. You come back to find the bag (and phone) have been stolen. PP cover would pay for the bag, contents and phone. Phone insurance would pay nothing.

    My 2p:

Many thanks - very comprehensive, I'll look into it. I only asked you so that you could act out your Grouch persona :rotfl:

Oscar, I saw your posts earlier about phone insurance and as you were posting the hints again I was on the phone to my home insurer getting cover for my future purchase. Far cheaper than mobile insurance. Thanks

Any ideas on when Tesco are announcing prices/contracts etc

    Cheers

When I spoke to them on the phone yesterday they said that they would not be stocking the iPhone 4 until exactly a week after everybody else. Then again, I think customer care on all mobile networks don't even know how many eyes they have at the moment! :o

But, I wouldn't have thought they will be available via Tesco's on Thursday as all other operators announced their prices at least a week before they were actually going to be available.

Some might say your as well not having insurance because if you do drop it and smash the screen it's £146 from Apple for a replacement.
Obviously no use if it gets nicked but worth thinking about.

I can only agree, I ensured that I am covered for my iPad, my iPhone, netbook and laptop, camera's and lenses all replace new for old in the event of breakage and fully covered for theft by anybody or thing bar a nomadic vagrant 2nd galatic Borg, all for the extortianate sum of £23 extra per year with a £25 excess.

Quick tip - go for a shop in an unfashionable area. I live in a dowdy West Yorkshire town, can't imagine they'll be kicking the door down on Thursday am to get the new iPhone - most of the people here don't even know what a mobile is :rotfl:

    LMAO love it

Just ordered mine from apple for £499. estimated delivery date: 15th July. Hopefully they will ship sooner. I can't hang around waiting for Tesco to announce their prices as it is likely to also be around £499 for the PAYG phone anyways.
