Does Satnav use data or wifi? or neither?

Neither, however to enhance the experience iPhone uses something called assisted GPS which I believe does use data

  • GPS uses satellite technology like with a tom-tom.. it can use data in order to perform some extra cool functions as djrobmac suggested, however native GPS technology is the use of satellites in space :)

You've obviously not been reading then as these have been on offer for £10 each at Tesco for at least the past week so you won't need to buy two if you didn't want.

Neither and both is the answer.

The GPS subsystem will use first try and use assisted GPS to get a location fix, this uses a little data, (be that over the air or wifi). If it can't get a signal it will use regular GPS but take a lot longer to get a fix. There is a "lookup table" of GPS data on every satellite transmitted every so ofter (15 mins IIRC) and it will need to wait for that. If it's been on recently then it may have this data in memory and will not take as long to get a fix. Assisted GPS cheats by looking up this data rather than wait for a satellite to broadvcast it all.

To use it as a sat nav you need a program to convert this loction in to a directional route and the maps, if they are loaded on to a card or in memory then you will not use data or Wifi.
If they are drawn down from the web on demand then you will use Data or Wifi.

Depending how you configure the phone it may use Wifi over a 3G connection or vice versa.
