In my experience family law deals with Child Protection.

However, of course a more local firm would be best. However, as Anon hadnt given her whereabouts, I used this as an example. Sorry looking back on it it isnt that clear.

Also to add, when I have worked with families where abuse has been alleged, I have always recommended that the family gets support and advocacy through the Family Rights Group. They in my experience are excellent, at ensuring that processes are fairly undertaken, they will criticise and critique what social workers do, and how they have done it, and help YOU to understand what your rights are and ensure that the social services department adhere to not only legal but procedural guidelines as well. Im not 100% but they may be able to source some legal representation to you as well. Additionally, they will be able to advise you on what parts of the files you are able to see, and support you in this. I recommend you contact them, and they will be able to support you more.

Children law is a different discipline and although some solicitors specialising in family law will handle cases involving children in the care system, the real people to see are solicitors specialising in children law. This is a whole different field and it is this area that deals with child protection and will have the experience to handle this type of case. It is essential that the solicitor chosen is well versed in the current protocol for management of care cases. This is going to be a children law specialist, not a family specialist. Children Panel solicitors have advanced training so one of these is even better but not essential for a parent provided children law is still their area of speciality.

thanks for clarifying that there Bossyboots, as I said Ive been out of C&F SW for a little while and things are ever so slightly rusty, so you may well be correct there :)

In any event I expect that the Family Rights Group would be well placed to advise the OP of whatever the legal options are, and they are firmly on the side of supporting the family during such traumatic times

The swing to children law speciality is a relatively recent concept and I suspect when you were actively working in the field, more "family" solicitors were assisting the parties than is the case now. With the advent of the Law Society Children Panel providing a bank of solicitors for children, there has been a rollover to children law being a speciality of its own and although not all specialists are members of the panel, they still maintain an up to date working brief in child care cases. Also, from the social worker's point of view you would probably not be made aware of the niceties of the situation as your local authority legal team would have been the ones with most contact on that front. The first battallion of child care lawyers would have been doing general family work as their bread and butter income provider.

Anon43, I feel for you so much too, you must be absolutely devastated. You need to get yourself some representation pretty sharpish. As others have suggested get the camera and photograph you home top to bottom.

Keep a diary and write down as much as you can remember that they say when they come to you or speak to you.

Could any neighbours speak up for you as character? Perhaps see what they say even if its just a shoulder to lean on or someone to look after your kids for a while while you get sorted. Have you any family nearby who could help out or support you?
