  • When getting the MAC code from BT they said that the band limits were being re-assessed and that my £24.99 /month for 512k would be upgraded to 2M for the same price. This seems to be a general offer that everybody is going to get from 17 Feb if their line allows it.

There will be download limits but as I don't seem to have hit one yet I'll worry about that when it happens.
  • 2M for £24.99 seems a good deal
  • I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to get onto EFH as I currently don't have ADSL.

The activation charge at EFH is a whopping £80 so I was thinking I could sign up with another ISP for one month with a lower activation cost say £50 + £17ish for a months rental. Then migrate to EFH for £30 and then just pay the £9.99+VAT a month

anyone have any ideas for which ISP to choose to start with and if this would be easily achieved?

    thanks

You may have a job finding an ISP that will allow you to jump ship after just a month without you losing money. Most have a year or min 3 months contract. If less than that they are likely to charge more to compensate.

Anyway on your suggested figures £50 + 30 = £80 whch is what EFh charge for new startups anyway so where's the saving?
  • Gazdude - thought Virgin BB would allow you to do this - its £17.99 for the month, although folks did report it was a problem getting the MAC code from them.

You're right I worked it out wrong somewhere! Only a Virgin migration like allthatmularky said would give a good saving but then its hit and miss with Virgin if you get put on the same system as EFH (datastream/ipstream).
  • Hi,

I've just joined virgin (about 10 minutes ago) as they offer NO CONTRACT and FREE activation (no free modems or microfilter but hey..)

Will I be able to switch to EFH after a month or is there a problem somewhere?

I hope not. Please let me know as I think I can still cancel if needs be.

    Many thanks

    Simon

PS anyone knopw when Martin is bringing out the updated broadband article that he mentioned a couple of weeks ago?

If you are on IPstream then there will no problem unless Virgin drag their feet supplying a MAC code. But if you are ondatastream then you are stuck with Virgin I'm afraid!

But in a few months we might be able to see a method that allows migration between the two systems.
  • Does anyone know what virgin use or do they use both? Is there a way I can find out before they connect me because if I can't transfer then I'll cancel. If They're ok then I'm on for a bargain as you get 1000 point (£10) from rpoints for taking up virgin broadband...

    Thanks

I think you can only find out once you are actually running the service then you do the following
To check if your on IP stream or datastream you ned to log on to the Test.
to do this disconect from your adsl internet, and enter the folowing into your router or modems conection settings, make sure that you know your default settings before you change them.

    ( no password)
    Username : bt_test@startup_domain
    Pass word:

If your on IP stream you should get a test page, if your on datastream it wont work.

Virgin use both data and ip stream so its 50/50!
