I'm currently paying £27.99 a month with Wanadoo (formerly Freeserve) for an unlimited 512K connection
I've been toying with the idea of changing but their new tariffs are capped and their cheapest is £17.99 a month for 1mb but only allows around 8 hours surfing a day. I don't want to be restricted on the amount of time I can spend online as both my PC's are permanently connected so I'm worried about incurring extra high costsAlso, once you leave the £27.99 unlimited option you can't go back to it.
I've been reading about this EFH offer though and it's definitely very competitve and I'm very tempted! I looked at their site and it asks for a MAC code before you can migrate which I've called Wanadoo to get but they say it will take several days to organise and I've to call them back next week
My other concern is what to do about my email as I've had the same address for around 6 years now and obviously I'll lose this if I leave Wanadoo. What other options are there (apart from Hotmail and Yahoo as I hate web-based email) and is it worth all the hassle of changing over (I'm not sure I can remember all the places I'm registered with etc) to save a few quid or should I risk changing my tariff with Wanadoo.
Help!!!"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

A MAC code can be made instantly they are stalling you and telling you porkies !
As for email dont worry about changing its like moving house you just tell everybody your new address !!
Its not worth staying just to keep your email addy, you could always get Wanadoo to change the account to a dial up pay as you go that way you can keep the Email but still access via Broadband and outlook express , you just have to dial into the account every couple of months for 2 mins to keep it active !!!0 -
I had dialup with freeserve on an anytime tariff. I cancelled that and went back to pay as you go. When I went for broadband I signed up with Metronet Check out their web site for the various options availabe.
I still use the freeserve email address even connecting via metronet I just have the SMTP settings as smtp.metronet.co.uk and the POP3 one as wanadoo.co.uk - and it works fine.
But in saying all that not sure how it will work in your case by cancelling a broadband connection! You could always say you want to go back to dialup!0 -

Excellent idea, I wouldn't have thought of that!!!
Thanks guys
PS gonna call back and try to get my MAC code out of them today then
PPS is this EFH offer the best one around or could I cut costs even further elsewhere?
PPPS... won't they suss out that I'm up to something dodgy if I ask for my MAC code and then ask to go onto dial-up? ... What's the best way of doing this?

I am fuming
Just called Wanadoo back to request my MAC code today and have basically been given the run around (while clocking up a call charge on their 0870 number at 23p pm )
First I am told that they have to put a request through to their team leader who then emails the dept that deals with MAC codes and then wait for a reply from them, so I ask if I can be put directly through to that dept so they can deal with me directly over the phone ... apparently that dept doesn't have any telephones!!!!
I then ask to be put through to the Team Leader as I'm not happy with this answer and feel as though I'm being fobbed off, only to be told that there's nobody working in the MAC code dept at weekends so I have to call back on Monday GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

I think if you only announce that you want to go back to dial-up, you'll be in for the disconnection and reconnection fees the 2 firms pass on from BT.
Maybe someone else can help ... ?0 -
I'm with Freeserve/Wanadoo on the Anytime dial-up package and looking to go broadband very very soon, but obviously there are several faster, cheaper, better broadband packages available than Wanadoo's.
I accordingly also use email addresses based on the Freeserve fsnet.co.uk suffix and for the foreseeable future would want to maintain many of these until I had successfully migrated some of them (if not all) to new addresses. Even then it might be useful to keep the old Freeserve email address.
I was already aware of the possibility of doing this by switching to the PAYG service, but thought that you had to dial-up at least once a month to maintain your account.
However I've just looked and it is 90 days.
Even then, you don't actually lose it providing you "Retrieve or Restore Account" before 260 days have expired.

Suspended Wanadoo Pay As You Go account
If you're a Wanadoo Pay As You Go member and haven't used your Wanadoo account to dial up to Wanadoo in the last 90 days, your account will suspend and you will no longer be able to connect.
If this has happened, it is possible to reactivate your Pay As You Go account up to 260 days from when you last dialled in. To do this, simply click on the Retrieve or Restore Account button below.
Alternatively, if you can't get online to do this, call Wanadoo Customer Support on 0870 872 0099. (Lines are open from 8am-10pm, 7 days a week and calls are charged at national rate).
Note: These instructions only apply to Pay As You Go accounts. HomeTime and AnyTime accounts do not suspend through non-use.
Click the button to reactivate a suspended Pay As You Go account.

Obviously, as someone else stated, irrespective of connection or service provider, you can still receive your Freeserve/Wanadoo emails by just setting up a POP3 account for them in Outlook Express, or similar, however if you want to send emails under this email address, you will need to be connected via the Wanadoo PAYG service.
If and when you connect up make sure you do it at the right time !!!!!
