Is it just me that plays them at their own game? Music on and DIY/cleaning first thing in the morning? Nothing better than hearing next door banging on the wall trying to tell me to shut up when she has spent all of the previous night (ie. 1am until 5am) arguing and slamming doors as hard as she can... I love having a young child and having to get up at 6am :j gives me so much extra time for DIY :j0

I think I must be the only person who's read this loooong post and has come away with the impression that the OP is a terrible snob and unbelievebly patronising towards a young family who are doing what most families do- enjoy being together and doing family things within their own house and garden.
Children playing in the garden ?? My Goodness how terrible!
Maybe the probable normal family will choke on their "shop bought" burgers (My God- the peasents!) and then the OP will get the silence she so craves.
No, you're not. I was thinking just this myself."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

Unfortunately this isn't true. Other posters have said they have had tyres slashed and windows broken after just speaking to neighbours.
So she sits in silence indoors or goes the OTT route of speaking to environmental health without at least finding what what her neighbours attitude might be like??0

I too have experienced noisy, dirty and violent neighbours. As the offenders are tenants the EH route is practical as they can be evicted. If they were owner occupiers the only practical solution would be to move. In my case I sold to a property developer who didn't care what the neighbours were like as he wouldn't be living there. After the developer remodeled the house, built a double garage with games room above right next to their back garden and laid a ginormous patio the awful people next door decided to sell up and move themselves. He also kept a barking guard dog on the site.0

Well in that case if she is not willing to have that conversation, the best thing to do is to move out.
You could rent it out and move closer to your work.
I wouldnt go round getting environnental health involved as if you need to sell it it will go against you when you are selling as you have a dispute.
If you truly cant bear the idea of having a chat with them ( i admit, I totally cant get my head around this) but you must be very shy?? Then the best thing to do is speak to a letting agent asap and get gone asap to save your own emotional health.
Maybe you could move to an executive type flat where there is not likely to be any children then you can have a small balcony where you can read your book?
But why SHOULD O.P. move? SHE is not the one causing the problem. SHE is the one who owns her home. SHE was there first. THEY are the ones who are antisocial.
Nope - personally...I wouldnt say one single word to the neighbours or so much as glance their way. I would just bear all those facts in mind and then head off surreptitiously to see what ways the Council etc could "deal with them" for breaking whatever regulations they were breaking - and hopefully they would move.0
