I know what Freecycle/Freegle is about thanks, just saying people have the right to choose, on whatever grounds, who to give things away to. Asking doesn't mean you will/should get what you want. Freecycle/Freegle does work after all by people offering things and choosing who to give to out of those who have asked, and people asking for things, then the people who have said things deciding whether to give them or not.

Some people state in messages now they won't give to anyone who will resell, I however wouldn't worry if someone resold an item I had given away.

When we moved house, the only charity out of 6 who would collect, couldn't come for 2 weeks and we had no transport to get the items to them. So it's not always that simple as Freegle or charity.

It all comes down to the choice of the giver and there is nothing wrong with that- items still get saved from landfill.

Sadly Freelge/Freecycle is like any section of society now- people can and do take advantage, and the givers get taken advantage of. Givers though have gotten wise and hence are more choosy sometimes about who an item goes to. Things still get saved from landfill which is the important thing.

How do you know from the request /reply that the individual meets your rather patronising criteria?

I'm sure I could spin you a very convincing "sob story" if I really wanted to. You'd have no idea whether I was a suitable "deserving cause" or not.

Freecycle exists to keep items out of land fill. That is it. If you want to get a nice warm glow for giving your unwanted items away to the needy either give them to a charity shop or to the local homeless shelter.

It makes absolute sense to request/offer items that are wanted for a one off occasion just like children's ski wear.

Hey no need to have a go at me! They are my items to give away and I get to choose who they go to and it's my business, not yours.

Any sob stories I get, poorly worded "fone me pls on xxx" or "I want" replies get deleted and then I pick someone randomly from those that are left.

There are many on freegle/freecycle who think like me, hence seeing messages with "no sob stories" or "I don't want it to be re-sold" on my local group.

At the end of the day the items I give away don't end up in the landfill which is what the ethos is. It's nothing to do with you or anyone else how I pick someone.

same here - hence why some bits are still in my celler awaiting a nice wanted advert..... and numerous people get filtered straight into my 'timewasters' folder.

this one amused me today because it's now beyond some people to clean something they get for free.................
Wanted nice clean sit in baby walker and a high chair please.
    can collect .. Thankyou
    Happy New Year!

I haven't visited this thread for a while but this entry on our local freecycle tickled me and prompted me to drop by and share. This woman is the antithesis of the 'would need to be delivered' brigade and if I saw her, first, I would applaud then offer to give her a hand carrying it but she sounds like wonder woman so there would likely be no need:

    Hi Guys
I have some friends coming to stay at the last moment and I need a sofa bed I only need to borrow it for a week.
It also needs to be relatively light as I will be collecting it by bus.
I need the sofa bed by Thursday night if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

Somehow I don't think that this lady means a sofa bed (maybe inflatable mattress?), unless she is Britain's strongest woman and has the gift of the gab (come on you'd need it to talk your way onto a bus carrying a sofa bed :-) ).

Still smiling at the image of her at a bus stop ...

I offered a kitchen appliance today and have a reply with a standard desperate-for-this sob story from someone who can collect anytime and whose email address appears to contain a name and profession.

The profession is scrap merchant.

I know I'll get replies saying people can do what they like with freecycled items but it's the lying that bothers me; there may well be someone who genuinely needs the item, but how am I supposed to know? If I had wanted the item sold for scrap I'd have done so myself.

ETA: Oh, and my favourite wanted ads are the bloke who wants a free caravan and the person who keeps advertising for an LCD telly of 46" or above for his elderly mother.
