One of my big bug-bears is the amount of scrolling I have to do. This is particularly anonnying when the post content consists of just a couple of lines, but the stuff at the left causes the overall post length to be many times that.
This also has the problem of introducing a lot of 'white space' under the post content that can almost give you snow-blindness ... (all right, I exaggerate).
Anyway, here's something I knocked up to show the effect on one of the earlier posts in this thread. It's in old-style, but it gives the idea. The amount of 'white space' saved (marked in grey) is about a third of the total in this case.
Aaaaw, thanks - using me as the guinnea pig (I feel honoured to have a longish name now)!!
The likes of Fermi / Wow etc don't have this problem! However I know a man that will.....

Don't know if I'm the only one having this problem, as it hasnt been mentioned yet, but each time I try to 'expire' a thread, it comes up with the following message -
Not Found
The requested URL /large_expired.php was not found on this server.

One thing that is starting to annoy me is that the amount of "white space" is a bit overwhelming.
Really really looks too bright if reading for any length of time.

I did say in post 29 it would be
Well according to all the so called expert's that write HTML courses it always is, and this seems to prove that point.
Just toneing it down to a just of white by a few steps (in whicever direction of the spectrum you like) is supposed to be enough, apparently, suppose its a tweak and see thing to know just how far
same with the text0 -

Yep. Even a small difference makes it so much easier on the eye.
Saying that, I've been playing around, and even some bigger changes are a lot better.
For example, something like:Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
IVA & fee charging DMP companies: Profits from misery, motivated ONLY by greed0 -

Here is an example of the revised version - maybe they have listed to you guys cos it seems to go across the top now, as mentioned

However one other fault, there is no Last Post breadcrumb trail anymore.... There is still the "First" but no "Last Post" option....2010 - year of the troll

MSE has said that when the finished design is rolled out to everyone, we will have the option to switch back to the old style.
As that is going to happen, then perhaps there could also be the option to switch to a slightly different version of the new style instead?
One where the bright white is replaced by some less stark but still subtle colours, BUT keeping all the other main design element of the new style?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I always thought with most BB's you could actually allow the user their own interface to change the look/colour slightly - if they chose?
So to alleviate all this, when you log in (under user CP) there could be a part where you pick the colour scheme you want, from old layout, new layout, shaded layout etc etc..... wouldn't take too many resources or server space as it would just be the CSS that changes wouldn't it?
I know where I work we have 4 versions of Intranet, the basic version, accessibility version, colour selector version and user edit version so we can change colours that suit our eyes/location etc..... (some buildings are darker/lighter than others for instance)....2010 - year of the troll

On many boards you can have a choice of styles. But it is up to the board owner/developer what they allow and implement.
On MSE we have not had a choice up until now.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I agree fermi. The board style is a form of branding i suppose, so it does limit what options can be available, but i see no reason why versions with subtle background differances should be an issue, and as you say, the option for more than one style is already there, if allowed, so food for thought for the webteam maybe :thinks:0

Woah - where have all your posts gone? You're not a new member, i've spoken to you (and joined your b/r website) for months? Confused Niddy
But yea, I think the option (within the branding style) to change interface would be a good one, even if like you & fermi say, to tone down the white background.....
Every little helps :money:2010 - year of the troll
