I know one of my previous neighbours who was on benefits, and was going to be forever, and he got a mortgage to buy his flat. He went to the same independent advisor as I did. Think he got IB or IS/DLA poss IIDB, he had grafted all his life, he was a skilled worker in the shipyards but his back had packed up. I think the way he got a mortgage was because his condition was never ever going to improve so his bens were for life, coupled with the fact that the council had valued our flats at the princely sum of £11,500.00, think the mortgage company thought he was a good bet. On the other hand, I know when my bro went for mortgage advice, they wouldn't take his ctc into account, so all he could afford was a garden shed (not that the ctc would have made much difference, but it might have helped..)
So, it is possible to get a mortgage when on benefits, just depends on the benefits and probably on the amount of mortgage required.RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

I'm a lurker but have read this and other threads with interest.
I hope you don't think I am being rude, but I would like to ask Black Saturn a question.
I notice that you frequently visit your boyfriend in London, leaving your children behind. You've also mentioned holidays to places like Germany and Amsterdam with your boyfriend, again leaving the children behind.
I'm interested in your comment:I know I could get a really well paid job and earn lots of K but I had children to be with them and enjoy them, not to give them to someone else.
I was just wondering why you think it's acceptable to dump your children while you go off with your boyfriend, but find it unacceptable for mothers to use childcare so they can work?0 -
Thinking about it, my MIL got a mortgage (for £4k) on a RTB property when she was on a State Pension.
So yes, I think it does depend upon the nature of the benefit (whether it's permanent or not) and the amount of the mortgage.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Actually, I think how B-S got her house is her business unless she chooses to tell us - and even then, unless it's something that can be replicated by other MSErs (unlikely that blind one legged donkey will come up trumps again, eh) then i don't see it's of much interest really.
I see little value in pressurising people to give information they're not comfortable in sharing. Infact I think it's rude.
I don't have any views on Black Saturn personally one way or the other (although her fruit cobbler on old style is lovely), this is more a general point that I think posters are entitled to post without being hectored to give more information then they wish to.
I don't mean to give offense to anybody - I just think it's a great shame when an excellent thread gets side tracked with what is really a personal issue.0 -
I just wanted to say good luck to all the single parents. It's the hardest job to do, regardless of your other circumstances and everyone should have a virtual pat on the back for managing to do it and keep sane0

Yes, I wholly agree with you. When I posted about maybe she had had an inheritance it was with a view to saying what you have said far more eloquently than me, i.e. that it is no-one else's business.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

When my husband left, he wanted to be off the mortgage on this house. I had the option to sell it (noooo!) or buy him out and get the mortgage in my sole name.
The mortgage lender said no when I was on IS only, however when I got a job they said they would look at my circumstances.
When I got a job, my income was made up of a mixture of wages, tax credits and maintenance from my ex. I was working part time as my youngest was pre-school age.
On the branch advisors advice, I submitted my application with a full SOA, a letter from ex comfirming his payments and a letter from me explaining I would be looking to work longer hours once my then 3 year old was in full time school. I was told they may not consider the tax credits and maintenance as income as neither is guarenteed income, especially the maintenance as it's voluntary with no court order or CSA involvement.
The application and additional info was passed to some underwriting department and thankfully they said I could have the mortgage in my sole name.
We were long standing members of the mortgage lender, and had never missed a payment, so I do wonder if that worked in my favour too.
Anyway, I just thought I'd post to say it is possible to get a mortgage on tax credits and a low income. Here I go again on my own....0 -

Does anyone know how to cancel a bet at the bookies?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0
