Yes splitting plants is easy!..., I usually wait until they look like a few plants squished together and dig them out with a fork with as much root as possible. Try and get an even amount of root on each one and pop them back in the ground and water, the roots can be quite tough and it may seem a bit brutal to force them apart dependong on the type (some have bigger roots than others). They might wilt a bit ,but within a few weeks should perk back up again. Dont know what time of year you are supposed to do this because I just do it when I need to fill a gap and it usually works!

I got 4 quarterpounder burgers from Asda yesterday, froze them in two's and the tray that they came in will make a fabulous drip tray for two plant pots :)

Is splitting primulas as easy as it sounds? I got quite a few this year and most have grown really well. I was out deadheading them at the weekend and they have lots of new flowers coming through.

Absolutely! As bertiebots says try to get some roots to each shoot. My front garden borders are covered now in primulas having started off with just a few plants. I have purple and pink ones with the yellow in the middle of the flower and another 20+ plants ready to sell. Don't know if they will still be in flower come the selling season!

They do come on again but when or is it a matter of pulling dead leaves and flowers and they will start up again?

I got some garden paint from wilkinsons today half price so I can paint my arbour seat...its a lovely pale chalky blue! The arbour is one of my best ever garden bargains. I got it from Asda about 6 years ago and it was only £30 which is cheaper than most benches alone!
Looks like wilkinsons are marking all the gardening stuff up for a sale ...so keep your eyes peeled!

I got some raspberry canes from my friend to put in the allotment. They had taken over one corner of her garden so she was glad to get rid.
I also have some new little strawberry plants which I potted up from runners last year and am going to get them in the ground tomorrow.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

  • I scrubbed clean about 200 cobbles/large pebbles that I had dug out of the garden, and used them to disguise an ugly concrete area :j

Bought a bergenia for 50p at the boot sale on Sunday and when I came to plant it it quite easily and naturally split into 3 clumps - so my 3 bergenias cost me 16.66p each - bargain!:j

Have popped in to Morrisons several times since someone mentioned the flower buckets but have never seen any - I've obviously been beaten to it by some other frugal gardening MSEer!
Oh dear, here we go again.
