If you get a small tin, a can of beans perhaps then roll newspaper around it several times, scrunch up the paper at one end so as to make your pot.
    Remove the tin of beans.

iv made a compost "bin" out of a old wooden chest of drawes minus any drawers lol.. that i found in my shed when i moved in. turned it on its back and put it in corner on concrete, its not too high but some boards will do the trick. and to think i was going to spnd £20 + on one lol.
I made a raised bed in this way..its a good size and deeper than the raised bed kit that i bought from B+Q.

  • I have now potted up a sizeable amount of my seedlings that have sprouted from last years seed collections and they appear to be in good health. Also dug up some mint and put in pots which will hopefully be sold along with the plants.

Oh, and another Arum Lily sale via the internet. That is the third in the last few weeks :)

Just tipped out my first bin of finished compost - rich and odourless- perfect. And the bin was a gift from a friend. Got to get Dh to cut the top of a huge olive oil drum scrounged from local restaurant then I can plant something pretty in it! All my plants this year have been started in supermarket food trays and have homemade labels from a peice of leftover plasticard. Great sense of achievement guys, we are truly digging for victory

I got a nice surprise today.

Last year, I had extended my borders and removed spits of turf to make way for them. I put the turf upside down and stacked it behind some bushes. It has all broken down - the worms have loved the pile - and I've got loads of rich top soil to freshen up my veggie plot.

I've discovered that the large yoghurt pots with clear plastic lids make great little propogaters if you sow window sill herb seeds in slightly smaller pots and put them inside, then you can just take off the lids when they germinate.

Also DH mentioned that there are some pallets at work WAITING TO BE BROKEN UP AND PUT IN THE SKIP:eek:. He is under strict instructions to put them in the back of the car tomorrow and they are going to be my new compost bin.

And another thing - boot sales at this time of year are full of 'proper' gardeners selling off their excess seedlings and bigger plants too, at ridiculously cheap prices. I've been buying loads and reckon I've probably spent about a tenth of what it would have cost at a garden centre.
Oh dear, here we go again.

my local small family run garden centre sells different sized plug trays for about 10p, I cut them down to fit the trays, always worth checking with smaller garden centres wether they do this.
